Como, Peter

Dr. Peter G. Como, 63, of Ellicott City, Maryland passed away unexpectedly on March 14, 2017. Peter is predeceased by his father, Robert Como, as well as several Aunts, Uncles and Cousins. Peter was born in Binghamton, NY to Robert and Phyllis (DiRienzo) Como on September 20, 1953. He graduated from Union Endicott High School, St. Bonaventure University, The University of Texas at El Paso, and earned his Ph.D. in Neuropsychology from The University of Delaware. He began his career as a Clinical Psychologist practitioner at the University Of Rochester Medical Center, and was in charge of research, grant writing, and oversaw several clinical trials worldwide. For over 30 years, Peter dedicated his life's passion to his patients and speaking at conferences all across the globe for the Huntington's Disease Society, North American Neuromodulation Society, Parkinson's Disease Foundation, The Michael J. Fox Foundation, Tourette's Association of America, and The Epilepsy Foundation. Most recently, Peter worked as a Neuropsychologist in the Neurodiagnostic and Neurotherapeutic Devices Branch of the FDA. He was married to the love of his life, Lisa (Chase) Como, on April 26, 2013 at The Herrington on the Bay in North Shore, Maryland. Lisa graduated from RIT/NTID and works as an Interpreter for the Deaf. His beautiful life will forever be cherished by his wife, Lisa (Chase) Como, his daughters Brandi Gilbert, Meghan (Gilbert) and Stuart Miller, and son Christopher and Jessica Gilbert; his Mother Phyllis (DiRienzo) Como, his sister and brother-in law Catherine Como and Paul Conroy, his niece Marie Pisani and nephew Michael Pisani and very special friends John and Janet Updike. Peter was an avid New York Giants, Yankees, and horse racing fan who entertained friends at his Preakness Race party each year. He enjoyed spending his free time playing golf, traveling, and relishing his special beverage of choice, Bud Light, with friends and family. He was particularly proud of accomplishing 5 marathons including The Athens Classic Marathon in Greece, The Dublin Marathon in Ireland, The New York City Marathon, The Marine Corp. Marathon in Washington D.C., and The Boston Marathon. Peter treasured the relationships he developed with his friends from St. Bonaventure University and his colleagues from the University of Rochester Medical Center.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Tuesday 12 pm at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church, 701 West Main Street, Endicott. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Johnson City at the convenience of the family. The family will receive friends at church Tuesday from 10 to 11:45 am. A Memorial Celebration is being planned for May 2017 in Rochester, NY. I am deeply saddened having heard of Peter's passing. I knew him at the FDA where I often knocked on his door with a question. He was passionate about clinical research, and had a truth-telling stance. He did not mince on words when things had to be brought up. I am so sorry for your loss. RIP Peter.

Mrs. Como: I recently learned about Peter's passing from an FDA colleague at a conference. I am truly saddened. My company spent about 7 years at FDA. Peter was the best thing that happened to us in that time. He was the lead reviewer on our file. He was passionate and intelligent. He knew the filed well. He always treated us fairly and with respect. He was a good and honest man. And from me and my team who worked with him, we wish you comfort in this time of mourning.

Dear Lisa, Peter's passing leaves such a large hole in many people's lives, including my own. Peter was the first person I mentored at FDA, but I learned as much from him as he did from me. His knowledge, kindness, and humor were always present and always appreciated. I will always feel privileged to have worked with him and will miss him. May his memory bring you peace and comfort. ~Natalie

I'm so saddened by the loss of such a wonderful man. I met Peter in 1995 when I came to Rochester as a postdoctoral fellow. I have not been in touch with Peter since I left Rochester in 2000. But, I remember him fondly, always kind, supportive, and valuably knowledgeable in his profession. He will be greatly missed and very dearly remembered. My deepest condolences to his family and loved ones.

Dear Phyllis, Cathy, Lisa, John and Janet........ There are no words to express the depth of my shock and sadness.
Although the pain that each of you is experiencing is unique, it is clearly understood. There is no greater pain than the loss of a child, a brother, a husband, or your closest friend.
The journey you have begun is long and unending. Please know that my prayers and thoughts will be forever with you, just as the love Peter felt for each of you continues.

I am heartbroken to hear of Peter's passing. He was a cherished mentor and dear friend of mine from my time at FDA. He did so much to advance the field of neuropsychology and the memories shared here are a testament to how many friend's and patient's lives he improved. I will miss his laugh and friendship, though his legacy and memory will always remain.

When I was a resident in neurology at the University of Rochester Medical Center, I worked with a team of researchers, including Peter, on a field study investigating a large Mennonite family in northern Alberta with a number of members affected by Tourette's Syndrome.
