William Kerila Obituary

Kerila, William

William "PopPop" Kerila of Endwell

William Kerila 88 devoted husband, father and grandfather passed peacefully at home on Sunday evening, March 5, 2017.

He was predeceased by his wife of fifty-one years, Mary Burns Kerila in 2007.

Bill is survived by his children, Thomas Kerila of Chenango Bridge, Cathleen and her husband Scott Mc Pherson of Endicott, David Kerila and his wife, Dawn of Endwell, and Robert Kerila and his wife, Lisa of Endwell, five grandchildren, Amanda, Daniel, Katie, Emily, and Allyssa, sister-in-laws, Jean Burns of Beaver Falls, PA, and Kathleen and her husband Bill Ryan of Cazenovia, many cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was a member of the Church of the Holy Family and a former usher. He was a retired engineering manager for I.B.M. Corporation, Endicott. He was a graduate of Syracuse University and an Army veteran.

He was the rock of his family taking care of his parents and other family members. He loved reminiscing with his grandchildren about growing up in Johnson City, spending time with them at their sporting events and walking and spending time with his "Mall Buddies" solving the problems of the world.

A Funeral Mass will be offered on Saturday 10am at Church of the Holy Family, 3600 Phyllis Street, Endwell. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday 4-7pm at the Chopyak-Scheider Funeral Home, 326 Prospect Street, Binghamton.

So sorry to hear about the passing of my former neighbor - he was a great guy. I was a friend of his son Dave as a teenager and have many fond memories of 'Mr. Kerila'. Before Dave and I were old enough to drive, his dad would drive us to various golf courses and play a round of golf with us. He was always very kind and had a good sense of humor. One thing that was unique about Bill was that he would always initiate a conversation with me, not out of obligation but because he wanted to. He was genuinely interested in what was going on in my life and never spoke down to me just because I was a teenager. I always admired him for that. He raised his kids to have the same kindness and caring for others that he exhibited. I hadn't seen Bill in many years but I'm sure he was a fantastic grandfather to his grandkids. He'll be sorely missed by many.

Bill was a co-worker and friend for over 40 years.

He spoke often of his grand-children and attending their sport functions. I'll miss our mall walks and coffee chats thereafter -- as he was always a true gentleman -- never one to criticize or find fault.

Our Lord has blessed his family with many fond memories -- he's at peace now with his beloved wife.

Thanks Bill for your service and advice over these many years.
