Brian Bluth Obituary

Brian Jon Bluth
January 10, 1957 - September 15, 2023
Brian Jon Bluth, a resilient and witty individual, passed away on September 15, 2023. Born on January 10, 1957, in San Francisco, California, Brian grew up in Mill Valley and spent the latter part of his life in Sonoma, CA, where he was a kind and helpful neighbor who also helped stray cats survive.

A courageous Mill Valley firefighter and an astute arson investigator, where he delighted fellow firefighters with his cooking expertise. Brian worked the latter part of his career at Sonoma Developmental Center. Brian dedicated his life to public service.

Brian was not only known for his bravery and tenacity but also for his humorous storytelling at holiday dinners, an attribute that endeared him to everyone he met.

In Brian's early years, he was an avid outdoorsman, frequently capturing the world around him through his photography. His love for golf, cooking, baking, and gardening brought him joy and allowed him to share his passions with others. Brian's work at wine competitions and charity fundraisers further showed his commitment to his community. An avid reader, he was never without a book nearby, and his love for knowledge was evident in his witty conversations. It was often said that he was never at a loss for words.

Brian leaves behind a legacy of love and service. He is survived by his mother, Margaret Bluth, and his brothers, Mark Jon Bluth and Gregg Jon Bluth. He also leaves behind his sisters-in-law, Virginia Bluth, and Michelle Danzer, as well as his beloved niece and nephews, Cassandra, John, and Ross Bluth. Brian was preceded in death by his father, John A. Bluth.

The services for Brian will take place Saturday October 28, 2023, at 10 a.m. PT at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, 3 Oakdale Avenue, Mill Valley, CA 94941. Followed by a small reception in O'Brien Hall adjacent to the Church.

I didn't know Brian Bluth but his father John A. Bluth (Mr. Bluth) was my physical education teacher at Francisco Junior High School ,SF (1960 or so). Reading Brian's obituary, I can see Mr. Bluth's sense of public service carried on through his family---as it did through his students. More than most, Mr. Bluth seemed devoted to strengthening bodies and minds too. I remember Mr. Bluth particularly when he helped spark my educational growth. Although I was a hard worker, I wasn't much of an athlete---though gradually improving at rope-climbing, long-jumping, basketball, great in team sports....During one report card cycle, we students gave Mr. Bluth our cards---so he could write in our grades. In my last three classes, I had gotten A's. I didn't expect a high grade in gym. As we were practicing basketball, I noticed Mr. Bluth was looking at me (like pondering something). Later, I got my report card and he had given me an A-. Wow, I think he changed the grading curve. At the end of that day, I became somewhat a celebrity---because I had straight A's---a monumental change in my academic outlook. A year or so prior to his passing (around 20010-02), I was at a North Beach bus stop---when a man asked me if I had attended Francisco Junior High School. I said yes and he said he was Mr. Bluth---I said "Of course, I remember you" We chatted a bit. I think he was connecting to students he mentored and helped, which were many. Wish I had thanked him for the "A" and all that he did for our generation.
