Charles Jones Obituary

Charles B. Jones
Charles died peacefully in his home surrounded by loved ones on April 2, 2022. Charles was the loving and faithful husband of 55 years to his late wife Gail and a dedicated father to their three children. Charles was born in San Jose, CA and lived most of his life in Santa Rosa, CA. He attended San Jose State University and after transferring, graduated from San Francisco State University with a BA in Education and his teaching credential in 1964. He started his career as a teacher in Forestville and soon moved to the Piner-Olivet School District where he taught third, fourth, and sixth grade for over 30 years. One of his passions was his love for the outdoors. He shared this love with hundreds of students over the years by leading the outdoor education program for the district at Camp Cazadero and Westminster Woods. Charles shared this passion with his family as well. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, taking his family hunting at the deer club in Geyserville or to their family cabin at Medicine Lake. His children will never forget the wonderous times they spent there at the cabin when they were young. When his children were grown, Charles would spend time with each of his children's families at the cabin as well, continuing the family legacy.
Charles' hobbies didn't end with fishing and hunting, he enjoyed cooking and traveling as well. At Thanksgiving he would cook the turkeys in his outdoor pizza oven, make dozens of homemade pheasant raviolis, an amazing stracotta sauce, and so much more. Charles loved to travel and explore with his family including trips to Yellowstone, Europe, the Outer Banks, and the Grand Canyon.
Truly a renaissance man, he loved crushing grapes and making homemade wine with his friends.
His love was not limited to his family and friends. His trusty dogs Pinot and Vida were always with him, in his truck, on the couch, or on his bed, they never left his side.
In his retirement, when Charles wasn't hunting or fishing you could find him in his woodshop making heirloom quality rocking horses and hope chests for his eight grandchildren and grand nieces and nephews. He also lived his dream as a gentleman farmer. He planted, farmed, and carefully tended 5 acres of Pinot Noir grapes, from which produced award winning wines at local wineries. Charles and his wife Gail were known for hosting wonderful family gatherings, including their eldest granddaughter's wedding, family reunions, and Thanksgiving for the last 40 years at their beautiful property in Santa Rosa. Charles' faith was very important to him, he was a lifelong Catholic and attended Resurrection Parish. He will be greatly missed by his sister Carolyn Weinberger of Berkeley, his sister-in-law Carol of Santa Cruz, his children, Sheila (Frank) Esser of Napa; Maureen (John) McCurry of Santa Rosa, and Sean Jones of Horseshoe Bend, ID and his eight grandchildren Kaitlin (Dan) Ager; Maureen and Shannon Esser; Brigid and Julia McCurry; Lelia, Noah, and Mia Jones, and two great-grandchildren, Abby and Jake Ager. Preceded in death by his infant daughter Colleen, his parents Bill and Frances Jones, and his wife Gail Jones. A Funeral Mass will be said at Resurrection Parish in Santa Rosa, Saturday, April 9th at 2pm. Donations may be made in Charles' name to Catholic Charities https://www.catholiccharitiesusa.org/

I am so sorry. I had your father in 6th grade at Piner elementary. I will never forget him as I loved the outdoors also. He really helped me that year become happy and fulfilled. I had just moved and he took the time to make my transition welcome. God bless.

I´ll always remember the summer trip I took with Maureen and the rest of the family to Medicine Lake. It was a lot of fun riding around in the back of his gold- ish color 4 door pickup, half car sick all the time! I also remember him making me touch a snake, which I was deathly afraid to do but he encouraged me to and I did! That was the first and last time I ever touched a snake! He was a great teacher and a great man! It´s so sad to lose these great people. My condolences to the family.

Mr. Jones was a very kind man & my most beloved teacher at Piner Elementary. The way he taught was not by book & "desk" learning. He took you on journeys to the fields, we had a wild hawk in class once (among other visitors,) Camp Caz was a beautiful highlight of my 6th grade year. He read to us & the Highwayman by Alfred Noyes was a favorite. He never raised his voice. He was gentle. He loved his students. I am 65 now & I have never forgotten this man. He truly affected my life in very positive ways. Condolences to the family.
When I see the hawk soar , & the River run, the salamander in the creek & the ferns waving in the breeze I will think of you Mr. Jones & remember your beautiful voice as you read the Highwayman.

Mr. Jones was my 3rd grade teacher at Olivet Elementary. He was one of my most favorite teachers ever. I appreciated his love of the outdoors and all the cool things in his "science" cabinet: wasp nests, feathers, little skeletons, and such. Walks through the big field in the back of the school were so special. I loved and admired Mr. Jones' thoughtfulness, humor & kindness. May God bless him & his family.

Mr. Jones was one of a kind. I didn´t have him for a teacher but I went K-6th 1970-1976 and so some of my friends had him. He sometimes had a taxidermy weasel in his shirt pocket, it´s name was Chuck, lol He was a good teacher who never lost his cool. My condolences to his family.

Our deepest condolences to the entire Jones family, Mr. Jones was my sixth grade teacher at Piner elementary. He always took the time to make sure we understood our lessons and made it very interesting with his love of the great outdoors. His "walking" field trips to the fields surrounding the school he would teach us about edible plants and the many different types of animals and insects that lived in the area. His love for hunting, fishing and taxidermy was alway so very interesting to us and he would always have some kind of bird or animal he would bring in and share with us. For sixth grade camp he was the best guide you could ever ask for. I remember him sending us off on our nature hike with our camp counselor, while we were hiking he had taken a classmate who was legally blind on a similar ( but much shorter) hike, sent up a small camp fire and sat there with him one on one and enjoyed Mother Nature together. Thank you Mr. Jones for being such a kind person, may you Rest In Peace.
