Charles Masson Obituary

Charles McCloud Masson
February 14, 1924 - August 23, 2022
Charles McCloud Masson passed away peacefully at the age of 98 in his Kenwood home on Tuesday, August 23, 2022, with his beloved dog Carlos and care giver Joseph by his side.
Charles, known to all as "Charlie", was born on Valentine's Day in 1924 to Harriet and James Masson. He was a fourth generation Californian, a descendent of pioneers who traveled to California by wagon train from Iowa in 1859. His maternal grandparents lived on a ranch in Vacaville which eventually became The Nut Tree, he loved to visit there as a child and as an adult enjoyed many Thanksgiving gatherings there with his large family.
Charlie took great pride and honor from his service as an Army Scout at Bataan in the Philippines during World War II. His front-line stories about climbing mountains to observe enemy positions were riveting, told with humor and grace. His World War II cap often prompted sidewalk encounters with people who thanked him for his service. He was extremely proud to be recognized and honored at the 75th anniversary of D-Day held at Normandy in 2019.
Charlie and his daughter, Page, would raise the flag together in the morning and then lower it at dusk often. He also taught her how to properly fold the flag.
Charlie had a successful career as a surveyor and construction manager at PG&E and retired after 40 years' service.
Charlie and his wife Page started building their Kenwood Dream home near Chateau St. Jean in 1960, where they raised their children. Charlie and his wife Page became the parents of twins they named Charles Stanley and Page Harriet, born in 1963. Charlie lived there for 59 years, during which time his son Charlie passed in 1986 and his amazing wife Page passed in 2014.
The family were avid animal lovers. They had many animals. Charlie and Page were faithful supporters of Pets Lifeline In 1987, they founded the original volunteer support group and Thrift Shop. Throughout their lives, they spearheaded many projects supporting Pet's Lifeline. Charlie and Page were also avid supporters of the Luther Burbank Center for the Arts, where Page was recognized as Sonoma Valley Volunteer of the Year.
Charlie loved to play horseshoes and was an avid competitor. He played in tournaments and won first place several times. Another sport he enjoyed watching was baseball and was an avid San Francisco Giants fan.
Among those who survive him are his 101-year-old brother James; beloved daughter Page Harriet Irwin; grandchildren, Brandon, and Charles Irwin; great grandchildren Anabelle, Everett and Bronson Irwin.
A celebration of his life will be hosted in the future. Contributions in his memory may be made to Pets Lifeline.

My parents were Charlie´s neighbors in Kenwood. While my parents didn´t move there until 1988, it took no time whatsoever until Charlie and my dad were fast friends as they bonded over horseshoes. I don´t ever remember visiting when they weren´t outside together throwing some shoes. Charlie was also the guy they called when they needed to move a rattlesnake. Charlie seemed to take great pleasure in this and even left the remnants of one unfortunate snake on top of my parents´ mailbox one fine day. They got a big laugh out of that, once they realized it wasn´t alive. Charlie & Page were great neighbors & I know my parents were delighted to call them friends.
