F. Dunham Obituary

F. Geoffrey Dunham
February 21, 1943 - May 20, 2023
On May 20, 2023, Geoffrey Dunham, lawyer, raconteur, guitar picker, devoted friend, loving father and husband, passed away at home in his sleep with his loving and dedicated wife by his side.
Fentress Geoffrey Dunham was born in Hollywood, California, on February 21, 1943, to Elizabeth Angelica Hill, a Standford-educated, San Francisco socialite and William Donaldson Dunham. He was raised in Pacific Heights.
Geoff's life was infused with music. In the 60s, he was a participant in the Great Folk Scare, playing guitar and singing in coffee shops. As he explained it, he dressed entirely in leather, which, given his size, demanded a lot of cow.
His lifelong quest was to find the perfect guitar. Music stayed with him throughout his life: songs picked on the beautiful hand-made guitars he favored.
He attended Sonoma State where he was the editor of the college rag, The Steppe. He was a fourth-generation Californian who loved Sonoma County. From January 1973 to March 1974, he was the mayor of Cotati, landing him on the cover of the Rolling Stone. Giving up his political ambitions, he went to law school, graduating and being admitted to the Bar in 1977.
FGD practiced criminal defense in Sonoma County until he retired in 2022. During that period, he was a looming presence in the Bar, handling cases big and small. He taught evidence at his alma mater, Empire School of Law; he provided free legal counseling for veterans through the VA., and he extended his hand to help whenever he could.
He was also a serious student of the art of baseball. He delighted in rattling off sports statistics, and collecting baseball memorabilia was his avocation.
His parents and his younger brother David predeceased Geoff. He is survived by his wife Kathleen; his siblings Hilary, and Priscilla; his children: Scott, Randy, Tadd, Ryan, and Laurel; and a host of friends and colleagues.

I made a friendship with Geoffrey through purchasing some of his baseball memorabilia online. We chatted often about or lives, our shared interest in baseball and when I needed advice, he was always available to chat and bestow his knowledge to me. Although we never met in person, I looked forward to our phone conversations and he was someone who I admired and loved for his genuine interest in my life and my family. I had been recently texting him without a response and a Google search unfortunately brought me here. To his family left behind, I hope you find solace in knowing that he was a man with unwavering compassion and had a heart as big as his smile. I am saddened to hear this news but grateful to have known this wonderful gentleman. God bless.

Finding myself looking for a lawyer for a veteran issue, the local VSO officer told me about Geoffrey's pro bono work at the medical center and how beloved he was there. They didn't know he had passed away so I've told them to post this beautiful obituary. I truly wish I had known Geoff based on this incredible description and also comments by friends. What a fantastic guy! My Dad was a WW2 disabled veteran and he would have loved Geoffrey as do I !! I am a songwriter so we would have had so much to share together. Those who knew him were truly blessed. So sorry for your loss!

We are so grateful that we had the opportunity to know Geoffrey; he helped my husband, a veteran, with some legal issues through the VA. Every time we met with him, he always had a joke to tell. My husband had the same kind of sense of humor. We shared laughs each time we met with him.
We moved out of the area for a time and he an Ryan continued to help us with our legal issue.
We thought of him through the years since that time and wished we could thank him for his help.
Low and behold, I got that opportunity. We both happened to be at Park View Acute Care in the Physical Therapy room, where we had a long conversation. And, I was so thankful to be able so Thank You Mr. Dunham!
It was a pleasure to know you!

Sometimes I never understood what exactly when exactly I know we lost touch. Wish we hadn´t. Always miss you Geoffrey be happy up there. I know you must be in heaven.

We were classmates in the inaugural class at Empire College of Law and did battle in the courtrooms of Sonoma County for many years. He was always the gentleman.

Jeff was a wonderful person with a big heart. I was his private investigator for several years. He always had something to say to everyone at the courthouse. He was a kind soul. Rest in peace, my friend.

Marteen Miller "forced" me to "supervise" Geoff's first jury trial. I never said a word the entire time. My true pleasure to have the privilege of knowing him

One of my oldest, kindest and most amazing friends. A big man with a big heart, an amazing vocabulary, an expert in golf and baseball, great musical talent , a wise leader, beloved husband and dad. A vast number of friends here and of several who passed before him. He will have the best seats for the games of the future. Sonoma County has lost another great one.

My deepest condolences to the family. May his memory bring peace to your hearts.
Geoff spent many decades at the Hall of Justice. He was professional, cordial and had quite the sense of humor. Geoff was well respected in the legal community. If you knew him musically, he was an excellent guitarist and his singing voice was very pleasing. He encouraged those who were interested in music to continue their passion for it. We sang a few duets at different venues long ago. Audiences always enjoyed his performances.
Sincerely,
Patti Davis
