Greg Mars Obituary
Greg Harris Mars
August 7, 1947 - August 23, 2024
Greg grew up in Glendale and bravely served his country in the Vietnam War after being drafted into the Army. Following his service, he and his friends embarked on a memorable cross-country journey to Boston before eventually settling in Mill Valley. His passion for learning led him to attend the College of Marin. In the 1980s, Greg and his beloved wife moved to Petaluma, where he became an integral part of the community.
An award-winning photographer, Greg's talent was showcased at the Sonoma County Fair, Sonoma/Marin Fair, and the Sonoma County Harvest Fair, where his stunning images of birds, nature, and historical subjects won numerous ribbons and accolades. He took special delight in capturing the beauty of old farm equipment and buildings, reflecting his appreciation for history and heritage. Greg was a proud member of the Petaluma Photographers Club, where he found joy in sharing his passion with fellow enthusiasts.
Greg was also deeply committed to his community. He and his wife co-chaired the Heritage Festival, sponsored by the Petaluma Rotary Club, and worked closely with about 15 heritage organizations, representing the Danish Lodge and promoting cultural appreciation and connection. He was an active member of the Danish Brotherhood of Petaluma, serving as President for two years, and cherished the friendships and shared traditions that enriched his life.
A lifelong volunteer, Greg generously gave his time to various causes. In his younger years, he volunteered with Marin Head Start and was a dedicated Big Brother, leaving a lasting impact on many lives. He was also an avid reader, spending countless hours at the Petaluma Library and immersing himself in two to three books each week.
Above all, Greg was a kind and loving person who touched everyone around him with his gentle spirit and compassionate heart. His family was his greatest joy, and he was affectionately known as "Pop Pop" by his grandchildren, who adored him.
Greg is survived by his devoted wife of 40 years, Jan, and her children Eric, Kristen, and Jennifer, as well as his beloved grandchildren Justin, Tyler, Rebecca, and Ryan.
A Celebration of Greg's Life will be held on Sunday, November 3rd, at 2:00 p.m. at Elim Lutheran Church, 504 Baker Street, Petaluma, CA.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to organizations supporting veterans, the Veterans Administration, or the local library in Greg's memory.
