Harold AMES Obituary

AMES, Harold Charles Harold Charles Ames, 87, of Bodega Bay, CA, passed away peacefully in his sleep on June 11, 2016. Harold was born on September 9, 1928 to Harold & Frieda (Knecht) Ames and was raised in Bodega Bay. He attended Tomales High School and married his high school sweetheart, Shirley Rhodes in 1949. Harold is survived by his wife, Shirley; daughter Janet (Randy) Mantua; son Jerry (Janet) Ames; grandchildren Joe, Andrea and Jared; four great-grandchildren; sister Glenice Carpenter, and many loved ones. Harold began his career as a commercial fisherman at the age of 16. He fished for 60 years, and was a mentor to many. He was always ready to give advice, lend a hand, or make repairs to help his fellow fishermen. He was the last of the "old" generation of Fishermen. Harold loved his annual hunting trips with family and friends, sports fishing & camping. Harold served on the Board of Directors for the Bodega Bay Public Utility District for 43 years. He was a charter member of the Bodega Bay Grange and instrumental to its origin. He was involved with the creation of the Bodega Bay Volunteer Fire Department. He, along with his brother-in law, Earl Carpenter and fellow fisherman Paul Wedel helped found the United Reserve Fund where he served as a Director. Harold worked with the County on the development of Spud Point Marina and served on the Advisory Committee for many years. He was involved with Fish & Game, in the crab, salmon, and herring fisheries. Harold will make his final voyage on the Sea Farmer and his ashes will be spread at sea. A celebration of life will be held at a future date. The family would like to thank Primrose for the care, compassion and kindness Harold received during his illness. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: Alzheimer's Association, P O Box 96011, Washington, DC 20090-6011.
