James Avati Obituary

AVATI, James Well known artist and illustrator, James Avati passed away on February 27, 2005 at his Petaluma residence surrounded by his dedicated family. Age 92 years. Loving and devoted father of "Zan" Firmage of ME; "Marghi" Markham of MD, James R. Avati of UT, "Betsi" Davies and Sally Avati, both of NJ, Jennifer Avati Lemos and Tim Avati, both of Petaluma, and the late Laurie Avati and Christopher Avati. Adored grandfather of many. Caring brother of Judy Getty of PA. James "retired" to Petaluma in 1989, where he found many things to keep him busy. Painting was his joy, whether it was a portrait, still life or the homes and business of Petaluma. He especially spent many hours at the turning basin of the Petaluma River. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Family assisted by PARENT-SORENSEN MORTUARY & CREMATORY, Magnolia Ave. and Keokuk St., Petaluma, CA.

The memories of your dad live in all of us. He was like a father to everyone in the neighborhood of Red Bank. When I think of him I remember him painting in the basement of the Washington Street house with tons of kids upstairs. It was though he was in his own world when he was in his studio. I'll remember Jim for his smile and his kindness.
