Jeffrey Hudson Obituary

Jeffrey Craig Hudson
Jeffrey Craig Hudson, devoted and compassionate father, brother and friend, died unexpectedly at his home in Santa Rosa on February 8th, 2019, leaving behind his beloved daughter Terra, of Rohnert Park, sister Dawn (Gary) Buchholz, of Lake County, and brother Steve of Santa Rosa. Born in Santa Rosa on May 14, 1952, he was predeceased by his mother Yvonne Hann Hudson, father Neil Hudson, and older brother Mike Hudson. Respected and admired by colleagues, parents and students, he was a gifted master teacher for forty years in the Piner Olivet School District, most recently at Olivet School. Even after his retirement, he continued to volunteer one day each week as a tutor in kindergarten classes. During his teaching career, he led curriculum committees, ran the annual educational summer nature camp for district students, and in his classroom fostered effective, research-based reading instruction, making sure that every student succeeded. In later years he was often greeted by former students who told him how much he had affected their lives. From an early age, Jeff was a superb athlete excelling at baseball and basketball. He played competitive, traveling tournament-level slow pitch softball until he was nearing fifty, recognized on the championship Coors and other teams as a dominant pitcher. Jeff was an enthusiastic Warriors and Giants fan over the decades through thick and thin; both teams have lost their greatest fan. (In elementary school, riding his bike with friends, he would even have an AM radio tuned to Giants' games!) He was a passionate naturalist. This included ornithology where his unique connection with ravens astonished his friends. Jeff was an accomplished backpacker, day hiker and cyclist. He graduated from Montgomery High School, Class of 1970, and Sonoma State University, 1976, where he received his bachelor and master's degrees.
Jeff had a genius for friendship. His friends will remember him as a man of complete integrity, stoically accepting whatever difficulties came his way, and glorying in the pleasures of being alive. He was a deeply committed brother and father; his relationship with daughter Terra was a centerpiece of his life.
The time and place of a memorial celebration will be announced in the near future.

Jeff Hudson, not only were you a wonderful teacher but also an amazing human being. My children remember playful bonks on the head, big hugs and making them laugh when you would talk like Donald Duck. I'll always remember your generous and giving heart, talks about bird watching and your great sense of humor. My heart is still heavy when I think of my house being completed and you not being there to celebrate with us. We love and miss you. My condolences to your family. ~ The Walker Family

He was a great teacher to our boys, but so much more than that. A great person, honest, engaging, thoughtful, active, generous, passionate, and all-in. You are missed Jeff but your rich legacy lives on in your family, friends, colleagues and thousands of students and their families.

Rest In Peace Jeff. You taught and inspired all 3 of my girls at Olivet elementary. You ignited their passion for learning and respect. Deeply saddened by your far too early departure. You are in a better place -probably will be playing basketball, baseball and will be backpacking to your hearts contentā¤

Jeff was a passionate teacher and set high standard for his students. He never failed to impress fellow teachers with his enthusiasm and work ethic. He and I shared a birthday month, a retirement date and a love for Bob Dylan. The last time I saw him was on the Graton trail about four years ago (just before I left the area). He looked comfortable and happy in retirement. The news of his passing is shocking. My best to his loved ones.

Both my daughters had Mr Hudson when they attended Olivet Elementary. He was the kindest, funny and outstanding teacher they ever had. He had a great relationship with all his students and they had so much respect for him. He will be greatly missed!
