Joyce Power Obituary

Joyce Power
July 5, 1935 - January 25, 2025
Joyce Power, a Sonoma County artist and longtime resident of Healdsburg and Cloverdale, passed away peacefully on January 25 at her home. She was 89.

Joyce was actively involved in area cultural establishments such as the Healdsburg Center for the Arts, where she served as a resident artist and Center manager. Her wine country landscapes rendered in soft pastels, oils and acrylics were featured in galleries and jury exhibitions in the Bay Area, and are held in private collections in the United States, Canada, and Europe.

Joyce Power, nee Campbell, was born on July 5, 1935, in Manitoba, Canada. Her parents, both school teachers, relocated the family to Ontario, Canada, where Joyce spent most of her childhood and teenage years. Joyce became a school teacher herself, after receiving her diploma from Hamilton Teachers College.

In her late 20s, Joyce moved to London, England, with her husband Keith Power, a Canadian journalist whom she met in Toronto. In London, Joyce and Keith became part of the Chelsea set of artists, writers, musicians and other bohemians during the onset of the Swinging Sixties.

In 1962, Joyce and Keith, with newborn son, Gavin, moved from London to San Francisco, where their second son, Brendan, was born in 1965.

In 1988, Joyce and Keith, both enophiles, saw the publication of their book, "The Wine Cellar Manual, Being at Home with Wine". During this period, Joyce was the general manager of The Caprice, a restaurant in Tiburon known for its exquisite French cuisine and cavernous wine cellar.

After many years in Mill Valley, Joyce and Keith retired to Healdsburg in 1998. In Healdsburg, Joyce, who had painted and sketched as a young woman, returned to the canvas, while also becoming a devoted ukulele player.

Joyce is survived by sister, Fran Hiscocks, son and daughter-in-law Gavin and Amber Power, son and daughter-in-law Brendan and Alexis Power, and granddaughter Quinn Power.

A celebration-of-life ceremony is being planned for summer 2025 in Sonoma County.

Saddened to learn of Joyce´s death. When I served on the Board of Directors of the Healdsburg Center for the Arts she was always up for any of my crazy ideas like riding in the 1930s Yellowstone Touring bus in the FFA Parade. She helped decorate it, recruited fellow artists to participate and even dressed up as French artist from the 1960s. Joyce was fun, positive and caring. I will miss her.

Joyce and Keith were my neighbors in Fitch Mountain Villas for many years. I deeply appreciated their friendship. Joyce was a marvelous cook, and I cherish memories of delicious meals at her table. She had a great sense of humor, was deeply loved and will be sorely missed. Rest in peace, Joyce.

Sad to hear of the passing of Joyce. Only knew her for a year or so while we played in the Del Webb ensemble. She was always very friendly to me. A year or two I acquired one of her pictures of the Alexander Valley Church. I cherish it. I tried to reconnect with her to no avail...I assume maybe she simply unable to respond. Blessings to her family and friends. Maeta Emmons

I cannot believe this wonderful person is gone. I arrived in Sonoma County and became part of the Healdsburg Plaza arts group in 2002. Joyce was not only a generous open person right away, she was hilarious. I don´t think I have had more laughs with anyone and we used to call each other the worst of names just to get a giggle out of one another. When I saw this today, my heart just sank. Please know how much Joyce Power meant to me and how much I will remember her for her warm spirit and amazing sense of humor and energy. Each time I saw her even many years later she was happy to see me and I was happy to see her. If there is a heaven, I know she is there and I also know when my time comes I´ll probably see her. She´ll be calling me some terrible name with a big old smile on her face and paintbrush in her hand and I will be so happy to see her. May the love you have for Joyce carry you through your own sweet path and know that I will not forget her, ever.

I am deeply saddened to hear about Joyce's passing. She was such a caring person with an amazing sense of humor. Her welcoming smile always made me feel valued. I used to joke with her about being my famous artist friend. Recently, I acquired a ukulele and had hoped she would teach me how to play. It brings me some comfort to know that she is now reunited with her dear Keith. I will miss her greatly.

Joyce was a dear friend with a great heart, a wry sense of humor and a talent for observation of human quirks. She was caring, and kind. I'm grateful to have known her. We shared interests in painting, and in playing ukulele. Somehow she knew just the right articles and poetry to forward to me that hit the mark perfectly. I appreciate that our big age difference was completely meaningless to her. She was a good, good friend. My deepest condolences to her family and loved ones.
