Leonard Svinth Obituary

Leonard Morgan Svinth
September 12, 1931 - April 1, 2023
Len Svinth, age 91, passed away quietly of heart failure on April 1, 2023. Surrounded by his loving wife Ruth and his family, he left this world to join family and friends in heavenly glory. Len was preceded in death by his parents Frederick and Anna (Martinson) Svinth, and siblings Betty and Donald.
A graduate of Humboldt State University with a BS in Botany, Len served proudly in the US Air Force during and after the Korean War and met and married the love of his life (Mary) Ruth Kirkegaard while stationed in Colorado. He served as a Statistician in Ramstein, Germany. Upon his return he continued his education, earned a Master's Degree in Education from Humboldt State and taught for one year in Millbrae CA. In 1960, he began his long and storied teaching career in Petaluma, teaching from 1960 to 1994 at Petaluma Junior High School. During this time he taught Math and Science, focusing on Earth Science, Zoology, Biology and Chemistry. Len organized and led many memorable trips with 9th or 8th grade students to Yosemite National Park and Lassen National Park as part of the Earth Science curriculum. He was PJHS Student Activities Director, developed the Summer Science Institute, and taught adult Night School for many years. After retiring in 1994, he taught for six years at Dominican College in Marin County. Throughout his career he taught Summer School, he worked as a Summer Salesman for NabisCo, taught a Seniors Safe Driving course, and worked as a Forest Ranger for the USFS.
Len has been an active member of Elim Lutheran Church for more than 60 years, leading EYA (Elim Youth Alive) with his wife Ruth during the 1960's and serving in many capacities including Council President and on Call Committees. He was an active member and President of PEP (Petaluma Ecumenical Properties) for many years. He was a member of SIR's (Seniors in Retirement) Branch 58 and in later years served as Big Sir and Chaplain. He and Ruth volunteered for many years at a local food bank, were active members in the Bay Area Campers group until recently. Len also coached youth baseball and was a leader in Shamrock 4-H club while his children were young.
Len always tried to not take life for "Granite" with his wonderful sense of humor – clean, comedic and very corny – which will be missed by family, students, colleagues and friends. His humor and quiet faith in God were essential to Len's life. His welcoming manner, love of education and the natural world were central to who he was – he made a positive impact wherever he put his energy. He took great pleasure and pride in his beautiful yard, sharing the abundance of flowers, fruits and vegetables, and he and Ruth hosted several wedding receptions and anniversary parties there.
Len is survived by his wife of 66 years Ruth, children Ron (Kim), Kresten (Fred Mansen), and Fred (Maria), grandchildren Jon (Adrianne) Mansen, Andy (Michelle) Mansen, Jared, Veronika (Herbert) Martinez, Kira, Dane and Luke Svinth, and great grandchildren Ty, Brett, Matthew and Jacob Mansen. He will be missed by many "extra" kids – those who were students, neighbors, young people he mentored and had the honor to lead and assist from childhood to adulthood.
A Memorial service will be held at Elim Lutheran Church at 504 Baker Street in Petaluma on Monday, May 29th, 2023, at 11 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, his family ask that you consider a donation to Petaluma Ecumenical Properties (www.pephousing.org/donate/), or Elim Lutheran Church (www.elimpetaluma.org/give.html) in Petaluma.

Not sure what to say?

Not sure what else I could add to what I already have said. I seem to recall he had a somewhat corny sense of humor, but we all laughed, and it helped us to learn. Again, a wonderful teacher. I wish I had spent more time getting to know him.

I was out in the rocks just the other day and was remembering Mr. Svinth from 8th grade prob ?1978 at PJHS. I wasn´t that interested in geology then and often wished I had paid more attention. I recalled how truly excited he was about "earth science" you could feel and see his enthusiasm in his entire body. I remember he was very tall with red hair and had big black glasses. I was on the Yosemite trip as well, what an undertaking with all those kids and a long bus ride. I also remember standing alongside the road near Platform Bridge on Petaluma Pt. Reyes Rd. and Mr. Svinth excitedly pointing to the side of the hill where you could see some kind of rock change. He was always light hearted and friendly. Condolences.

Mr. Svinth was my 8th grade science teacher in 1981; he is the reason I love science and pursued a career in clinical research. A lovely caring man who pushed us to be successful. I feel lucky to have been influenced by him and send my heartfelt condolences to his family.

My daughter Janna had him for science and spoke of him often. She enjoyed the Yosemite trip that he organized. I´m really sorry that I never met him as he sounds like a wonderful man and teacher. Condolences to his family and many friends and students!

What a wonderful science teacher he was. He made mysterious things clear! I was in his class at PJHS in 1961, and still recall how much I loved that class. He modeled the important values of kindness, curiosity, intelligence and, always, humor.

Mr Svinth was a PJHS icon. A great Science teacher, with words spoken in my 8th grade year that I still remember, over 40 years later, that I´ve used on my own kids.
I´m not sure what this meant (I´m certain that was his point) but whenever a classmate would ask him what day of the week it was (ie: "is today Friday?"), he would always answer "yes, all day, unless it rains" which left all of us (intentionally) bewildered. I may have forgotten some of his lessons, but have never forgotten this. Rest in Peace, and thank you for always evoking thought, Mr Svinth, even if it didn´t make sense to us 8th graders.

He was a good teacher with a stern look if you played around in class like I did. I remember him having tears in his eyes as we watched the Challenger explosion live in class.

Len Svinth's Junior High Earth Science camping trips to Yosemite and Lassen are now legendary, worthy additions to Petaluma lore. Who involved in those expeditions can ever forget the excitement of those dawn, cavalcade departures for 2 of California's iconic beauties, with most of Len's students fully prepped for the geographic wonders and camping adventures they were about to experience, many for the first and only time in their lives? And for those unfortunates who took it too lightly?....well, there was always a huge bean pot to be scrubbed before the comedy skits, tall tales and laughter around the campfire!! Thanks to Len, Ruth, their parent helpers and colleagues, good memories and friendships were forged during those trips for countless young Petalumans with Len's upbeat attitude being the inspiration for many of them to enter the teaching profession. Those of us who treasure and feel blessed with our Svinth memories offer our sympathy to Len's family and prayers of gratitude for his well lived life

I had him for science at PJHS in the late 80's. He always licked his thumb when he handed out papers but mostly besides him being a great teacher I remember the circular sign he had hanging from the ceiling with " to it" written on it. My condolences to the family, he was one of my favorite teachers.

I, Liz Ortelle (Isola) had the privilege of being taught science at PJHS in the late 1970s by Mr Svinth. What a wonderful legacy, he has left for his family and thankful to have been taught by a Godly man as him. I´m so sorry for your loss, it is heavens gain

I was in his class at PJHS back in the mid-60s, and I remember he had an old car (from the 40s or early 50s?), which had a push-button ignition(no key required) - he used to say that it had 4-70 Air Conditioning - 4 windows down at 70 MPH. A wonderful teacher.
