Maurice Marsac Obituary

MARSAC, Maurice & Melanie - A character actor, with over 100 film and television credits, Maurice Marsac passed away on May 6, 2007. He was predeceased by Melanie Marsac, his wife of 55 years, on April 16, 2007. He was born in La Croix, France on March 23, 1915, served in the French Army reserves as a captain, and worked as a secretary for the French Embassy in London until the outbreak of World War II. He returned to France and worked for the French underground during the war. After the war, he traveled to the United States to sell French wines. He eventually arrived in Los Angeles to pursue an acting career. He appeared in "To Have and Have Not" with Humphrey Bogart, "What a Way to Go, " "Take Her She's Mine", " King of Kings", and "Can-Can" to name but a few. He often played the haughty French waiter, as in "The Jerk" with Steve Martin. He was cast as the French teacher in the TV series "Our Miss Brooks" with Eve Arden. He also appeared in guest spots on countless TV shows such as "I Love Lucy" and "Hogan's Heroes". He and his wife, Melanie, were avid croquet players, participating in many tournaments from Beverly Hills to the Bay Area. They moved to Santa Rosa ten years ago, settling in the Oakmont neighborhood. They traveled extensively during their married life; they especially frequented France, and Mexico, both their respective countries of birth. In addition to croquet, their passion was modern art. Melanie predeceased Maurice by just three weeks. They were very much in love, and knew how to celebrate life, throughout their fifty five years of married life. They are survived by family in France, Mexico, and California. Please consider a donation to the charity of your choice in memory of this wonderful couple. A guest book for the Marsacs is available at www.legacy.com.

We first met Melanie and Maurice on the croquet lawns at Beverley Hills. Since then we have met many times when we visited USA. It was a great pleasure to host them at our home and our croquet club when they visited NZ with Erv Petersen.

As regulars on the Sonoma Cutrer lawns, Maurice, Melanie and I spent a lot of time together. They were indeed, classy people. Melanie was my first doubles partner in the S.F. Open in 1990, and she skillfully guided me through the games. We didn't win but she taught me a lot of croquet.
I'm always looking for Maurice in the films he appeared in, and truly delighted in hearing his voice with that great accent. I will always have fond memories of them both.

I first met Maurice and Melanie Marsac at the 1988 San Francisco Open in Stern Grove. Melanie patiently explained the American rules game to me, it being my 4th month in croquet. In 1989 Melanie and I were doubles partners in the Arizona Open – B flight. We finished in second place – Melanie was so thrilled. (Maurice finished 7th in the Championship flight.)
In 1994 Maurice, Melanie, and I went to New Zealand for a 15-day croquet and sightseeing tour. The entire time was a great joy. It was also in 1994 that they sold their Studio City home (after earthquake repairs) and moved to Oakmont. They were regular fixtures at Sonoma-Curter Croquet Club from then on.
I will miss them dearly and always cherish our times together on and off the croquet court.

I've known Maurice & Melanie since I was a little guy. Maurice used to climb a huge oak tree in our back yard and, in his deep french resonant voice, would shout, "Helloooo". They were a classy and fun couple and absolutely devoted to each other.
