Peter Benecke Obituary

Peter Benecke
March 25, 1952 - December 4, 2022
Peter Ames Benecke - occupation: Opera Singer (40+ years) - was born: March 25, 1952, in Roseburg, OR, the fourth son of Ruth (Johnson) and William O. Benecke (brothers: Mark (Nan), Steve (deceased), and Jeff (Tomoko) Benecke). He grew up in Bellingham, WA and died of cancer December 4, 2022 ,in Windsor, CA. He married Jody (Smith) Benecke (44+ years) and had two daughters: Lydia Marie and Emily Rose Benecke, and one grandson: Kamal Orion Benecke Khan. He was loved by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and in-laws.
Peter's first musical theatre performance was in March 1970 when he starred as "King Arthur" in Lerner & Loewe's musical Camelot in his senior year at Bellingham High School.
Peter received his vocal performance education as an undergraduate at Western Washington University and as a graduate student at the University of Alberta in Canada. In 1976 Peter traveled to Santa Barbara, CA, to work with famed voice teacher and former Met Opera star baritone Martial Singher at The Music Academy of the West. There he was cast to perform as a gypsy ("El Remendado") in Bizet's opera Carmen, conducted by Maurice Abravanel of the Utah Symphony. Peter was paired with soprano Jody Smith who was singing the role of "Frasquita." The young couple found that they danced the famed "Danse bohème" (Gypsy Dance) in Act II very well together and also enjoyed one particular aspect of the staging for the opera – their first shared kiss! Peter and Jody remained happily together as dancing and kissing partners, marrying in Santa Barbara in 1978. Their marriage of 44+ years produced two lovely daughters Lydia Marie (husband Hamza Khan, son Kamal Orion Khan) and Emily Rose (husband Brett Farrell).
In 1981, the opera-singing couple moved to Germany, where they stayed for almost 20 years. Peter was engaged as a fulltime opera singer at the famed Deutsche Oper am Rhein in Düsseldorf where he sang as a member of the solo ensemble. When he was introduced as a "new young American tenor" in concert with the Apollo-Chor in the Düsseldorf Tonhalle, the review noted that he'd received "the opportunity, before a large audience, to demonstrate his lyric voice . . . and convincingly clear bright tone." Subsequent engagements at the Wuppertaler Bühnen and guest appearances with many other companies accounted for his growing list of operatic repertoire.
Critics took note that onstage Peter performed with "such passion that the heartiest applause was his!" He was praised for his "flawless singing" and his "German accent" (as "Wenzel" in The Bartered Bride). He was a versatile performer, receiving a thumbs up for performing with "discreet, yet pointed comedy" (as "Triquet" in Eugene Onegin). In Lady Macbeth von Mzensk, Peter's presence was singled out for his one short scene as one of the "singing actors of superlative quality" in the company. For his appearance with the Wuppertalerbühnen in Hänsel und Gretel, the review was glowing: "The positive discovery of the evening was Peter Benecke as the Witch. With his smoothly-managed voice and complete theatrical engagement – especially on the Witch's Broomstick Ride – he was the real star of the production!" He could also be charming onstage and received the most (female) fan mail while he was performing in the role of "Freddy" in the German version of My Fair Lady (singing that well-known aria "Weil ich weiß in der Straße wohnst du!"
Peter performed in a range of classic operas from Mozart to Strauß, Verdi and Wagner. He had a reputation for being able to sight-read almost anything – even modern music. This skill came in handy and saved the day for the Musiktheater in Revier in Gelsenkirchen in March of 1992 when the newspaper reported that "The nightmare for any opera company" had occurred when the primary tenor in a "world premiere" modern opera The Visit (Besuch der alten Dame) became too ill to sing and no one else in the world knew the role! Peter, who was performing in a different opera in the company, was tapped while he was at lunch in the staff cantina: Could he sight-read the role?! If he could, the director would play the part onstage and Peter would sing it from the orchestra pit while looking at the music. Peter went through the score with the conductor and then agreed. The premiere was performed successfully that same evening, thanks to Peter! As the newspaper article said, "Practically just another normal day in the theater . . ."
The Benecke family moved back to the US in 2000 and to Santa Rosa in 2006, where Jody had been offered the fulltime job as Vocal Music Instructor (and now Music Department Chair) at Santa Rosa Junior College. While officially "retired" from singing, Peter still managed to get in some performances with the Pacific Conservatory of the Performing Arts at Allan Hancock College in Santa Maria in the Theaterfest production of Sweeney Todd (as "Beadle Bamford") and appeared in the SRJC Theatre Arts production of The Phantom of the Opera (as "Ubaldo Piangi"). Peter was especially known, however, for joyfully singing the loudest and most impressive "Happy Birthday!" to anyone who was lucky enough to be celebrating, whether at a private party, or in a restaurant, or even at Lynmar Estate's tasting room where he serenaded SNL star Rachel Dratch on her 50th. Peter burst into "O sole mio" while climbing the rigging of the tall ship "The Lady Washington" – surprising the crew and delighting the tourists. Anyone who sang in the chorus for the annual Redwood Empire Sing-Along Messiah got a good dose of possibly one of the strongest (loudest certainly) deliveries by the tenor section of "And He shall reign forever and ever!" in the Hallelujah Chorus!
Peter loved his work leading wine tastings over many years at Lynmar Estate Winery and, subsequently, for Williams Selyem Winery as well. He loved his voice students and they, in turn, loved him. Most of all, he loved his family, who were the center of his life. He was certainly the center of theirs.
Please support music and the arts in your schools. You will be memorializing Peter every time you attend an opera, a musical theatre production, a concert, or support a young singer who is chasing a dream. Dance and sing. Drink some wine. Life's too short to say negative things. Live and love now. Peter, you will remain in our (best) hearts!

Peter was such a light! I didn´t know him well, but he was always encouraging and supportive of all of us in the music program. It was so obvious just how much he loved Jodi, even in the smallest of interactions. His presence was felt and deeply admired. Sending all my love and hugs and prayers to Jodi and your whole family.

Jody, thank you for sharing this love letter to your life with Peter. He will always be Bacchus to us--inspiring us to live with abandon and joy in our hearts. What a gift to all of us who were lucky enough to walk by his side. His life was no 'brief candle' but an everlasting flame.

I was lucky enough to run into Jody, a high school friend, and Peter over 20 years ago. What a kind caring human. The way they would smile at each other when they would tell us about their family and their careers. I felt so happy listening to their adventures. I am so sorry for the loss of your husband, best friend, and amazing father. Thrilled he had the time to spend with his grandson too. I am happy he brought such joy to so many.

Kind of on a whim, I found myself studying voice at Santa Rosa Junior College. I saw what Jody´s vocal students were able to do and I told myself I have to be her student! This led me to get to know Peter. Peter and Jody soon became more than dear mentors to me. They helped change my life by showing me I can dream bigger because there´s so much more I can accomplish in my life than I thought possible! It was actually Peter´s words that made me decide to take the plunge into Classical Singing. It was during a concert choir when Jody had given me my first solo (I was ecstatic that she´d considered me good enough) However after the show Peter had said "This girl has real potential in this field". There was just something that clicked in me - if both Jody and Peter believe in me, I have to give it a shot! I owe so much to them.

I will miss Peter´s contagious laugh and his love for life and people. He seriously filled every room he was in with joy! It seems only natural that my last moment with him was just the occasion. Myself and two more of Jody/Peter´s students performed a big senior recital together before we were to transfer to our next music universities. I remember coming to Peter afterward and just feeling the deep sense of pride he felt when he gave me a hug and congratulated me. Afterwords a big group of us went out for dinner to celebrate. I remember looking over at him and my mom in a deep and fascinating conversation about a number of things. And I couldn´t help but just feel so grateful for his presence in my life. He blessed and touched countless people. He deeply supported people, especially students, to find their passion, take the risk and go after it! He will forever remain in my heart with deep admiration.

I have so many wonderful memories of hanging out with Peter at Karpilow family gatherings. We made each other laugh inappropriately loudly at inappropriate things and I loved him for it! We'll also never forget him singing "Happy Wedding To You" at our wedding. We'll always miss our friend Peter but will always celebrate his memory.

It has taken me a while to accept and come to understand the depths of my feelings regarding this wonderful person's passing.
Peter Benecke will remain in my heart and mind for the rest of my life. As a mentor and teacher, he cared so much for the development of young singers and performers. I knew this because I was one of them. Alongside his wife, he challenged us, and fostered our growth in such impactful ways as to infect us with his enthusiasm for art and life. His passion for opera, music, and artistry in all its forms was paralleled only by the immense power and strength of his warmth and love he showed to everyone. Peter did his best to make you feel welcome, and to be very present with you. He has touched my life and my heart since I met him, and he, along with his wife Jody Benecke are the reason I am the artist and person that I am today, and they are motivation for me of the artist I can be. I miss Peter dearly and mourn his passing greatly as do so many. And I hope he will visit us occasionally and spiritually in dreams, or in quiet moments, if only to shout majestically, "Hi, fans!" Rest in peace, you beautiful soul! While i may be shedding tears of sorrow at the physical loss of your presence, I smile because I knew you, and I know in our hearts and minds, you will never die.

Such dear friend for almost 50 years. Peter could elicit peals of laughter like no one else (we definitely would have been forced to sit at opposite ends of the classroom, had we been in school together...). Peter was a wonderful and much beloved father, a talented artist, a loving spouse and a treasured friend. He was welcoming to all, kind and open-hearted and truly embraced all that life had to offer. Until we meet again, dear Peter...

My time with Peter was brief but few people have ever made such an impact through their kindness, empathy, cheer, and love as he did for me. Peter truly lived life to the fullest all the way to the end, and we should be blessed to have the opportunity to do the same. My love and my heart pours out to Jody, Emily, Lydia, and all the family.

Peter Benecke was and is still a special person in my life. After Peter and Jody moved to Santa Rosa we stayed in touch on Facebook for several years. My husband Mike and I were able to visit them a couple of times in San Francisco. My favorite memory is a weekend when they joined us in SF and we went to a Cal game at Berkeley and then to the opera at the War Memorial Opera House. It was the first performance of the season, and as such was begun by the singing of the national anthem by the audience. When Peter and Jody began to sing in their beautiful operatic voices, the entire audience turned around to watch them sing. It was a beautiful and unforgettable experience to be part of that moment.

I met Peter over 40 years ago in the most unlikely of places -- a San Francisco financial firm where we were office assistants! We laughed our way through the experience, and from it came a lifetime friendship with Peter and Jody that has transcended time and place. The wonderful moments we've shared are highlights of my life. You are always in my thoughts, dearest friend.

Jan and I met Peter in 2012 when we walked into the Lynmar tasting room. I was wearing a t-shirt from Seattle Opera, where I had been a supernumerary. It had an obscure opera reference from Wagner's Ring Cycle, but of course Peter recognized it straight off. We became good friends, bonded by our love of music, wine, food, and of course our dear wives.

I'll never forget you my friend. You were one of a kind. Your zest for life was genuine and contagious. It was always fun hanging out with you. And I thank you for never once laughing or grimacing during our singing lessons!

And I'm sure you've given Jan a hug for me by now.

Jody, Lydia, Emily... Bless you all...

Peter... what do you say about someone like Peter? He was incredible. Amazing. Hilarious. Compassionate. As one of his students I can say first hand, he taught so much more than music. Peter has a huge legacy, filled with all the lives he touched; the hundreds of students, costars, and friends. I think it´s safe to say everyone who met Peter adored him. And I do believe he lives on in every person he touched. Words are not enough, will never be enough, to describe someone like Peter.

I remember most fondly Peter's 60th birthday and the most incredible rendition of "Happy Birthday" we've ever witnessed. Luz and I will treasure our memories of Peter and his bride Jody forever. Rest peacefully my friend.

I met Peter sometime before Jody and Peter´s wedding and then was lucky enough to attend their darling wedding in Santa Barbara. Little did I know that my husband Bob and I would move to Santa Barbara in 1995 and that the Benecke family would move back to the area a few years later. What fun times we had together! And how lucky we were to spend these precious years close by each other.

We will miss Peter and his infectious joie de vivre. But we´ll think of him with every delicious glass of wine we toast with and every beautiful piece of music we hear (especially tenors!).

We love you, Peter! And we send our love to Jody, Lydia, Emily, and the entire clan.

Much love,
Mindy & Bob

Dear Jody, Lydia, Emily and family-

You are in our thoughts and hearts. We´re sending you love, strength and many, many hugs.

Peter was truly one in a million. It´s rare to meet someone with such an infectious nature. His smile, his wit and of course his booming laugh that could echo through the loudest of parties. I was always so happy to see Peter and felt warmer and more joyful just being in his company. The memory of him serenading Great Marie will be with me for the rest of my life and will always bring a smile to my face. I feel blessed to have been even a small part of his life

We will miss Peter´s amazing voice, but mostly, we will miss his compassionate heart. Peter will remain an inspiration in our lives. He did what he lived to do ALL of his life. He lived with music in his heart and soul. His passion for singing and his devoted love for Jodie, Emily and Lydia was in every fiber of his being! His heart will live on in all who knew him. Peter will continue to inspire me to keep singing and keep family #1 in my heart. God bless you, Peter
