Solomon COHEN Obituary

COHEN, Dr. Solomon "Sol" 96, passed away peacefully on July 30, 2015, surrounded by loved ones, after an unexpected and tragic event. Born in Baltimore, March 11, 1919, he was preceded in death by his wife, Beatrice Boericke Cohen. Sol is survived by his children, Philip Cohen (Mary Beth) and Betsy Hershfield-Cohen (Annie); his stepchildren, Nick and Kate Papadopoulus and Joseph Sybrian; as well as his grandchildren, Anna, Laura, Kiah, Cooper and Sadie; and great-grandchildren, Tarek, Ketzia and Beatrice. In World War II Sol volunteered to be a bombardier, flying in B26s, serving as front-gunner. He remained proud of his service but forever circumspect about the lives he took and the comrades left behind. A proud Roosevelt Democrat, Sol never failed to vote. Sol spent 30 years as a pediatrician at Kaiser in S.F. and helped found the teenage clinic there. His last 30 years were spent on his small vineyard near Occidental watching over his grapes and tending his tomatoes. Sol was unstinting with his time and attention. Many worthy causes, artists, musicians and other individuals benefited from his generosity. Everyone he met seems to have a Sol story. His family is grateful to the staff at Howard Station Café who brightened his day each morning at breakfast. A celebration of his life will be held on September 20 at 4:00 p.m. For more information regarding the service, please contact: [email protected]

Our deepest sympathies . Sol was an dear, kind man , he was a close friend and cousin to my late parents Jack and Florence Layton. When he returned to Baltimore on rare occasions he always found time to visit with them and they shared precious time together. His passing was truly sad , our prayers to his family . When we discussed California we always stopped by to visit with Sol and he always welcomed us with open arms, and one one occassion spent a night with him . May his memory bring you all strength . Our prayers , Sol was a wonderful individual .

We met at The Bohemian Cafe when I was on a leave of absence from my teaching in S.F.. You had such a kind and gentle spirit, Sol. When you heard that I was looking for ways to supplement my income you invited me to pick grapes for a day
on your property and then gave me the best homemade bowl of minestrone I've ever tasted. The secret, you said, was to use napa cabbage and simmer it for a long time. When I purchased my very first home in Camp Meeker, you and Chester came over to a "house warming" dinner and brought a beautiful, locally made ceramic bowl, fresh bread and salt. I didn't know you well, but the brief encounters that we had, warmed my soul and made a lasting imprint on my heart. You were a blessing to all who knew you.

Dr. Cohen was our Pediatrician in San Francisco. A nicer kinder man would be hard to find. His warmth and love is treasured as when I think of him I smile...
