Dr. Solomon "Sol" COHEN

COHEN, Dr. Solomon "Sol" 96, passed away peacefully on July 30, 2015, surrounded by loved ones, after an unexpected and tragic event. Born in Baltimore, March 11, 1919, he was preceded in death by his wife, Beatrice Boericke Cohen. Sol is survived by his children, Philip Cohen (Mary Beth) and Betsy Hershfield-Cohen (Annie); his stepchildren, Nick and Kate Papadopoulus and Joseph Sybrian; as well as his grandchildren, Anna, Laura, Kiah, Cooper and Sadie; and great-grandchildren, Tarek, Ketzia and Beatrice. In World War II Sol volunteered to be a bombardier, flying in B26s, serving as front-gunner. He remained proud of his service but forever circumspect about the lives he took and the comrades left behind. A proud Roosevelt Democrat, Sol never failed to vote. Sol spent 30 years as a pediatrician at Kaiser in S.F. and helped found the teenage clinic there. His last 30 years were spent on his small vineyard near Occidental watching over his grapes and tending his tomatoes. Sol was unstinting with his time and attention. Many worthy causes, artists, musicians and other individuals benefited from his generosity. Everyone he met seems to have a Sol story. His family is grateful to the staff at Howard Station Café who brightened his day each morning at breakfast.
