Wayne Price Obituary
PRICE, Wayne G. Dr. Services will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 12, at Trinity Episcopal Church, Sonoma, for Dr. Wayne G. Price, 79, a prominent retired Sonoma surgeon, who died Thursday, March 7, 2002 at his home in Mission Highlands. Born in Healdsburg on September 26, 1922, he was the only child of Mr. and Mrs. O.H. "Slim" Price and a graduate of Healdsburg High School where he was an honors student and played basketball and baseball. He attended Stanford University, where he was a member of the freshman basketball team, and from where he graduated in 1944 and went on to Stanford Medical School and received his doctor of medicine degree in 1948. He and his wife, the former Eleanor "Nonie" Pendleton whom he married in 1945, came to Sonoma in 1948 where he joined the late Dr. William J. Newman in the general practice of medicine. In 1952 he joined the US Air Force medical corps and was stationed in Misawa, Japan. After his tour of duty was completed, he went to Fort Miley Hospital in San Francisco for his residency in surgery, which he completed under the Stanford and UC medical schools. He returned to Sonoma and began the practice of surgery in 1958, which he continued until his retirement in 1985. A past president and life member of the Sonoma Kiwanis Club, he was a co-founder of the Sonoma Valley Hospital Foundation and the A. Tom Smith, M.D. Memorial Golf Tournament-the latter benefiting nursing education for Sonoma Valley Hospital personnel-during the 25 years it was held at Sonoma National Golf Course. In addition to being dedicated backers and workers for projects involving Sonoma Valley, its youth, aged and needy, Dr. and Mrs. Price were renowned for hosting countless memorable parties at their spacious Mission Highlands residence. An ardent sports fan, Dr. Price enjoyed playing golf and snow skiing. He was also an inveterate traveler, visiting a variety of countries around the world during his lifetime. His wife of 42 years, "Nonie", preceded him in death in 1987. He is survived by his daughter, Barbara Cobb and her husband, Allan; and by his son, Charles Price and his wife Carol; and grandchildren Stuart, Mitchell and Kelsey Price and Nonie and Allison Cobb. all of Sonoma. Visitation at DUGGAN’S MISSION CHAPEL, 525 West Napa St., Sonoma, is welcomed from 12 noon until 5 p.m. on Sunday; on Monday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and from 9 a.m. to 12 noon on Tuesday. Memorial contributions to the Sonoma Valley Hospital Foundation or the Sonoma Valley charity of the donor’s choice are preferred by the family.
