William HARGREAVES Obituary

After a very short illness Bill Hargreaves died at home in the loving embrace of his family. Bill was a gentle and kind man who remained active throughout his 102 years. He was born in Oceanside California at his family home overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Bill led a charmed childhood of romping about the small beach community with his best friend and cousin, Harry. He graduated from UC Berkeley in 1935 with a bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering. During World War II Bill served on an escort aircraft carrier in the Pacific where he achieved the rank of lieutenant commander. After the war Bill went to work as a chemist and production manager for Nesbitt's in Los Angeles. In 1948 he married Janet Ingalls and together they raised three children, Richard, Bob, and Nancy in Montebello, California. Bill and Janet moved to Sebastopol in 1982 and enjoyed an active retirement of golf, duplicate bridge, tennis, gardening, and socializing with their friends. Janet passed away in 2010. Bill's seven grandchildren and one great granddaughter were always a joy to him. His family extends their gratitude to his community of friends who have enriched his life throughout the years. The family plans to hold a private memorial for Bill at a later date.

What a wonderful man Bill was. I knew him and Janet through bridge. Both were simply lovely people.
