D. Meyering Obituary

On October 1, 2023, D Steven Meyering M.D., affectionately known as Dr. Rat in astronomical circles, passed away like a falling star.He was born November 29, 1951, at Loma Linda to his mother, Joyce Marie Meyering, & father Donald. He was the first of 3 boys and his mom centered her life around these 3 rascals. He graduated from Pacific High School. He loved to race cars on Route 66 and rode a Harley Sportster. He worked for UPS as a router/packer. He worked on his 2 door hardtop Chevy or his 55 Chevy Nomad - his dream car and his dream life. On September 8, 1974, he was in a plane crash. They found Steve on the verge of death and airlifted him to San Bernardino County Hospital. At the time he was not expected to live and was told he would never walk. In 1975 he had surgery and met Ella Wyatt RN- his future wife. She would tell friends "she was going to marry that man."Steve had always had a passion for astronomy. He learned how to make mirrors, joined the RAS, and was president of Riverside Astronomical Society for several years in the 1990s. He used his garage to help others build mirrors and basically turned it into a lab for the RAS which earned him his moniker of Dr. Rat. He is survived by his wife, Ella, his brother Bob and his wife Lisa; and brother Dale, and his wife Pam.Services will be held at Mag Church, 8351 Magnolia Ave, Riverside, Ca on November 1, 2023 at 11:30 am

So sorry to hear of your passing. I often go to get a bloodtest in your old office, suite 100. Thought of you doctor and went online. You were my best doctor. Your wife was also so kind. I still hope you can relay this message to the family. Thank you. Lisette H. In Riverside

We were always impressed with Steve's generous nature in helping others in RAS and in giving many hours as president of the club. Although we moved from the Riverside area to Texas 13 years ago, we have many fond memories of Steve and, of course, you, Ella. Our prayers are with you and his brothers' families. I worked with Don at UPS. Just a young man then. He routed and loaded my package car. Went on a few MC rides with him. Likeable guy.RIP.

Dr. Meyering was my wife Michele & I's long time physician during our earlier years living in Riverside and later even after our move to Corona. He was ALWAYS a kind and caring person not only as a physician but on a very personal l level as well. My recall of his aircraft accident was on a trip to Alaska maybe? I'd spent two years traveling many very remote locations in that state and flying was risky with harsh weather. My wife and I got to visit briefly with Dr. Meyering & Ella in their office during his retirement party. Please share our caring thoughts with Ella and the family.

Steve was a very giving person of his time and knowledge. He helped many people build their own telescopes in his garage workshop. Steve was an active member of the Riverside Astronomical Society and served as president, organizing several events including a public viewing of Comet Hyakutake in 1996 and Jupiter after the collision of Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 in 1994. He will be missed.
