James Adams Obituary

JAMES W. ADAMS James W. Adams (Coach/Hoss) died peacefully on Thursday, July 25, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Fairfield, Kentucky on September 4, 1929 to Ben and Charlotte Clark Adams, he was their fifth son. He was preceded in death by his brothers Dennis, Ben Jr., Frank, Jack, and his sister, Margaret. He is survived by his brother, Isaac Adams of Beaumont, Texas. Jim (or Jim Bill as his wife and family called him) served in the Air Force from 1948 until 1952; his three-year enlistment was extended by the "Truman year" during the Korean Conflict. During that time, he served in Japan for over two years. After his discharge, he entered college at Western Kentucky but soon found that he was not accumulating any credits and he followed friends to Lamar, Colorado where there were approximately 15 "Kentucky boys" attending a junior college with a total enrollment of under 150 students. While attending Lamar Jr. College, he met his future wife, Barbara Ross, who was recently graduated from college and in her first year of teaching. They were married in February of 1954, moved to Las Vegas, New Mexico so that Jim could continue his college education. He received his BA from New Mexico Highlands University in 1956 and later completed his Master's from that same campus. His first year of teaching was in Umapine, Oregon, a small town near the border of Washington State. Jim and Barbara welcomed their first child, Cathryn, while living there. When Cathy was two weeks old, they completed a move to Williams, California in the Sacramento Valley. Four years later they moved to Hemet, still planning to keep moving every three or four years. Their second child, James Jr., was born in 1964 and somehow moving plans disappeared and they have lived in the same home for fifty years. Sharyl arrived in 1968 and Krista completed the family in 1969. Jim is survived by his wife of 59 years, Barbara, his children: Cathy Adams Remily, her children Michael married to Julie and parents of Christopher, Carter, Cole, and Cobe; her daughter, Tara Andreassen, married to Tom and their infant daughter, Lilly Sue. His son, Jim, is married to Cindee and they have two daughters, Cristina and Corbie of Murrieta. Their third child, Sharyl Adams Williams lives in Hemet with her daughter, Rebekah, and grandson, Milo. Their fourth child, Krista Adams Caley, now lives in Hemet with her daughter, Jessy, and son, Brandon. Jim stayed at San Jacinto High School for 26 years where he taught Physical Education classes and coached football and tennis. In the 70's, he started helping at MSJC's football program and then he became the tennis coach and taught tennis through December of 2012. Jim was still playing tennis through the end of June. He loved his Tuesday and Thursday matches at Valley Wide. He and his good tennis buddy, Pete Smith helped build the original tennis courts at the current San Jacinto High School with tennis team players and were instrumental in the planning and building of tennis courts at Vallley Wide Recreation. Jim loved his Catholic faith and was responsible for taking all four of his children to church when they were children. This last year, he depended on his children to take him to weekly mass. In 2006, Jim was in the first group inducted into the San Jacinto Athletic Hall of Fame. The family has asked that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the San Jacinto Education Foundation to support the "Coach "Hoss" Adams Scholarship." (address: 2045 South San Jacinto Avenue, San Jacinto, CA 92583) Donations and memories may also be shared through the miller-jones.com website under "Current Services" for James Adams. Mass will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 17, at Holy Spirit Church in Hemet. Following the mass, the family invites friends to join them for a Celebration of Life and refreshments in the gym at San Jacinto High School.

Coach Adams did not ever just merely teach, he effected positive change in every student he met I will always remember him as a man's man who taught not just how to face your fears, but also how to defeat them and in doing so live life to the fullest. See you on that future day Hoss!

I wish that my talents were for great writing, to do justice to a great man. Jim Adams will always be Coach Adams to me. Coach Adams never lied, always upbeat, With so much energy and wisdom.
There is a line from the book King Arthur, "Arthur the once and future King". That is how I think of Coach Adams. Jim "Hoss" Adams, the once and future Coach of SJHS. Because when someone so great once was, someone so great shall always be. RIP Coach Adams, you will always be in our hearts.

My love and prayers go out to each family member. May the Lord surround you with His love and give you comfort and peace.

It is a privilege for me to not only know Hoss, but his family as well, and they are all a reflection of him; kind, caring, generous and giving!

Hoss was a veteran teacher when I arrived at SJHS to start my 1st year of teaching in CA. One of my 1st impressions of him was how funny he was. He was always joking around. One day during a staff meeting, he got up and stood on top of a table to share his point of view. Of course he got away with it, and made us all chuckle. There was never a dull moment with him around, and needless to say, I was very sad when he retired.

He was truly one of a kind, and such a JOY to be around!

I later became close friends with his children and grandchildren; playing tennis with them, enjoying fun days at the family pool, watching Hoss talk tennis and string tennis rackets, and just sitting around, listening to his interesting and hysterical stories.

His crazy antics and zest for life brought such joy to life!

Hoss, you will live on in the lives of your children, grandchildren, and the countless individuals who you taught, coached, and supported in their athletic endeavors! Your love of tennis/sports, life, and your helpful spirit encouraged countless teens and young adults to reach their dreams!

Your "light" will shine forever!

Love you, Hoss!

My heart felt condolences to family and friends of coach boss. One of the great guys and such a unique character. MSJC tennis won the desert conference and was undefeated under his leadership. Coach got us all trophies that he paid for out of his own pocket. With love and aloha...Rick Richards MSJC 1976

Coach Adams was a brilliant educator and positive role model for generations of students. He made students feel that they were important and that there was a place for them; athletic or not. He touched our lives by showing how much he loved teaching; using humor and sincere interest in his students. He was one of the "best" public educators!

Hoss, you were quite the character. God I love you. You are man's man. The times that we shared are fond memories I often draw from. I will never forget the time the engine blew on the way back from playing Barstow, causing the hood to blow up, blocking our view. Boy, did you drive that van. Thank you for all your help guiding me with the HSJVTA. Thank you for molding me into a better person. Jim Adams was a great man! I am blessed to have had called him friend. Domo - Arigato

I will never forget about those times
you told us stories and taught us sang songs with us.
i will never forget the times we spent
fixing cages for all my animals and riding the horses in the riverbed.
How you taught me "Buck Pitch" and "Blackjack" How to use fireworks safely. Use a slingshot and shoot a gun. What firefly's and chiggers were, all the road trips in the motor home.
I loved how every time we passed the "S" we would say we see the "S".
All of these things go through my head
when I relax up in my bed, I loved you then and I love you still, I love you dad and I always will. I will never forget these times we had you were the best and you were "MY DAD"
