I was a Business major at Cal Poly, Pomona in the mid 80's, but my real love was history. I took every history class that I could as an unrestricted elective, including Dr. Yoshino's class on modern history, WWII to present one Summer Quarter.
Dr. Yoshino, your class is one of the best memories that I have of my time at Cal Poly. I enjoyed your class immensely. Your teaching style was very interpersonal, inclusive, approachable, and easily followed. You made the learning process a pleasure.
Thank you for the fond memories. Rest in peace.

Dr. Yoshino made me discover a love for history I didn't know I had within me. I took many courses, completed many units in college and Dr. Yoshino was by far the best professor I had as both an undergraduate and post graduate student. I took his classes in the early 90's. His lectures were riveting, I was captivated by his narrative style and he became my archetype for what an educator should be. He made me want to become a teacher even though I had no intention of pursuing a teaching career. Well, when I was laid off after the dot com bust, I figured why not try teaching. I wanted to teach history even though I had a different degree, and I wanted to give students a passion for learning like Dr Yoshino awakened in me. So here I am now almost 20 years as a high school history teacher. Now, I'll never be as good at it as Professor Yoshino, but honestly I've got it down pretty well and he will always be my inspiration and the high standard I aim for. I'm sad to now learn 5 years later that I won't be able to have some kind of reconnection with the person that made me want to teach. Life well lived, rest in peace.

This breaks my heart looking up your favorite professor is always the worst thing if he has passed. You we're right Mr Y! I was destined for greater things. I've spoken in front of C-SPAN I've traveled to 31 countries but when I talk about what good education is I talk about the passion that you taught with. I was young when we met maybe 18 years old I'm 35 now you were the only professor that actually tried to reach me. Education could use a man like you right now. I hate the fact that I couldn't pay homage to your life on the day of your death.
My heart goes out to your family but I know your family knows you enriched so many people.
I have been asked to do a TEDx talk and I plan on mentioning you, education doesn't have to be hard because you always made it interesting.
I am posting this from an airplane please forgive the typos I can't see them but I can guarantee you they're there.

I am very sorry for your loss. I had Mr Yoshino as an instructor over 20 years ago. I remember him very well. Because of him and because of the many places he spoke of, I gained a greater love for California. We have taken our kids to many places and so he has touched many lives I'm sure. How surprised I was when I saw him walking his dog in our neighborhood! We were neighbors and I knew right away who he was. your family will be in our thoughts and prayers
