He leaves behind many who loved him and who he loved in return. His wife Judith (Judy) Whitson, son Scott Whitson, wife Jeri and grandchildren Carissa and Brandon, of Minnifee. Son Mitchel Whitson, wife Audrey and grandsons Austin and Alec, of Fallbrook. Stepson (Judy's) Mike Maely, wife Karen and granddaughter Debra Maely, of Wrightwood. He is also survived by his mother, Anna Whitson of Riverside and brother George Whitson, wife Karen and nephews Matt and Danny, of Rockville Centre, New York. First wife Verna Whitson of Anaheim and her daughter Carol Casagrande of Canada. He was predeceased by his father and brother Robert John Whitson. Robert's children are Mitchel, Valerie, Tony, Tobey, and Ava of Nashville, TN. After graduating Erasmus High he joined the Air Force and while stationed near Sioux Ste. Marie, Canada he met and married Verna Aiello. He worked in Aerospace for a number of years, and Verna became an expert mover as Steve was transferred around the country many times with her and their two sons. They were living in California when the aerospace industry dried up. After trying sales for a while, he heard of an opening in the Anaheim Police Department. He worked patrol and spent many years on the night shift. He flew "Angel" the police helicopter, worked in I.D and was an Economic Crimes Detective. He served as president of the Anaheim Police Association. In 1986 he married Judy Whitson and they lived in a small trailer for 4 years while they built their home in Lake Mathews. Upon retiring, after 22 years in December 1994, Steve became editor and writer for Private Pilot Magazine and then launched Custom Plane Magazine. After ten years, he semi-retired and wrote free lance for several magazines. He earned his private pilots license in 1974 and subsequently had a commercial pilot license with ratings for rotorcraft-helicopter, aircraft multi engine instrument sea and land with a tail wheel endorsement. He was also a licensed aircraft engine and airframe mechanic. He received his Bachelors degree from University of Fullerton and had many certificates and licenses including Private Investigator. He held officer positions of many clubs and organizations. He was a member of the Corona Pilots Association, AOPA, Anaheim Police Association, Inland Empire HOG, Circle City HOG, El Prado Seniors Golf, Riverside Art Association, American Motorcycle Association, Trailblazers, Antique Airplane Association, Cessna Owners Association. Other affiliations past and present were Toastmasters, Comanche Society, various law enforcement groups, Sierra Club, Natures Conservatory, Abate, and many more. Among his interests during his lifetime were sky diving, aviation, skiing, poetry, photography, motorcycles, opera, classical music, Willie Nelson, art, hiking, golf, writing and he ran marathons. He pursued and was open to new friends and adventures while cherishing the old. He wasn't often without a book and kept a large assortment of dictionaries which he read from cover to cover. He was fascinated with words and continually added to his large vocabulary. He looked forward to golf, especially with the El Prado gang, his sons and brother George. It was common for him to disappear at a party to watch a golf game on his hosts TV. He enjoyed pizza and beer. Steve had a great sense of humor and loved to tease, especially the ladies. He was opinionated, stubborn, loyal, huggable, humorous, smart, honest, a great friend, father, grandfather and a fantastic husband. Steve was much loved and will continue to be in our hearts forever. Celebration of his life at Corona Airport, June 27th at 4pm. Interment at Riverside National Cemetery in July. In lieu of flowers, give a homeless person a couple bucks and/or help a disabled veteran and toast a beer to Steve.

There are only three men who have showed me love and support during my life when I have most needed it, my father, my grandfather, and Steve Whitson. I look at him as one of the most positive male influences I have had in my life and I am heartbroken that he is gone and I wasn't able to tell him that. I know he is in heaven now.

I meet Steve in a class at Cal State Fullerton.I remembered several things that he said during class that still stick in my memory.
One night I was the desk sgt when steve was new on the PD and assigned to the jail before his training was to start. He brought out some booking forms and I recognized him right away but he didn't recognize me so I had some fun with him.I began telling him about some embarresing moments in his life including the time he stole a Police car and drove it around the corner to play a trick on the Officers who were on a call and left the car running. I asked him how a police car thief ever wround up in a Police uniform. That was the only time I have ever seen Steve speachless. His mouth fell open and his eyes were as big as sausers. He could say nothing so I Told him to go back into the jail.
Steve was on my squad several times and I never was boared talking to him.He had a great intellect and we had some very interesting conversations and I always considered him a great friend. He will be sorely missed.
My condolences to all his family
Sincerely
Michael Murphy

Judy, I didn't know Steve well, that is to say, my father Ed and I met Steve only once during an airshow at your hanger May 2009. It is truely understandable why so many feel the way they do about Steve. He was friendly, hospitable, jovial and many other wonderful aspects of life that he lived so fully. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to meet Steve, however brief, and share a small joy in life, his smile.

Dear Judy;

David and I want to let you know that you are in our prayers. Steve was always a joy to be around and talk to.

One of my fondest momories was the time I went up in his plane. David was looking for me and when he was told that I had gone up in the plane, he could hardly believe it, since I'm afraid of heights. At the time it just seemed like the natural thing to do and since he had room for one mor I went.

Steve was a joy to talk to, and loved his laugh and humor. He will be greatly missed and may God comfort you at this time.

Dear Judy and family,
Jerry and I would like to extend our condolences to you and your family at this time of sorrow. I have many fond memories of Steve and Debbie in our IEHOG adventures. My favorite is last summer at Los Alamos when Steve, being an ordained minister, "married" Mark and Joan Germain a few months before the real wedding. I will miss that distinctive accent of his and his unique sense of humor. Judy, your extended HOG family will always be here for you. Julie and Jerry Birchfield

Judy,
Jeanette and I extend our condolences to you and the family. I knew Steve from his time at A.P.D. and later; on the golf course and being involved in some old nagging cases. He was fun to be around and he had a great sence of humor, especially on the golf course. He was dedicated and loyal to, "The Thin Blue Line." May you find comfort in your many fond memories of Steve.

Dear Judy and family, I attended the Fullerton Police Academy with Steve in 1973 and he was such a source of comfort to me, especially when the drill instructors got in our face to try and shake us. He was always at my side and his maturity was a calming force during those crazy times. Steve was a unique individual with knowledge far surpassing most of us. He left his mark on everyone he touched with his incredible personality. Love and Aloha to you and your family during this difficult time. Jim

"He was opinionated, stubborn, loyal, huggable, humorous, smart, honest, a great friend, father, grandfather and a fantastic husband."

This one sentence describes Steve to a T. It was my most sincere pleasure to work with him at Anaheim PD.

I gave five dollars to a lady on a highway exit and told her it was a gift from my friend Stephen Whitson.

God Bless You Judy through this tough time. I hope you find comfort in knowing how much you and he are loved by your friends and family.

The Anaheim Police Family lost two dear friends this week, Stephen and Jerry King. I will miss them both.

Judy and all Steve's family,
We will always cherish the memories of our trip to Vermont and New York with you both. Steve was a wonderful teacher, a wonderful inspirer, and a truly supportive man to all he met. He was ready with a "how-to" for anyone in need, and always had an opinion he was willing to share.

We will miss his smile, his wit, his humor, and his willingness to drop everything to sit and talk over a cup of coffee.
All our love to you and the family. You know we are here for you always.

Steve was always there when you needed him most. I remember comming home to Corana Airport from a group fly from Furnace Creek. We had a real bad crosswind and I was a new pilot. He talked me down and I never had a problem with a crosswid again. Thanks Steve I will always have you in my heart. May God be with you always.

Of course I want to express deep condolences for the Whitson family, as well as the Cunningham family. Of the few times I met with Steve, I can say that each time was especially favorable for me. He was quiet and unopinionated in my presence on those occasions, and definitely a very nice man... of course he would have to be if Judy married him. He has quite an impressive list of accomplishments in his life. He must have made "a difference" in many areas and with many people. His Life here will be missed by many who are left behind for a little while longer. By now he must have found wonderful companions in his New Life. (submitted by Mrs. Rick Hobbs)

dear judy,

bob and i have spent hours reminiscing the memories of steve in our lives. there were so many stories, it was hard to choose our favorite.

we especially enjoyed the time you and steve flew to catalina to spend time with us on our boat. we remember steve living with us for a few months after his split from his first wife. bob remembered several trips to catalina for the firemen's race with steve, once with jamie dodge, and once with john farrell (when he was a kid).

we remember the laughter, the jokes, the wry sense of humor, the poetry of his life. we are exceedingly grateful that we attended his 70th birthday party and got to see him one last time.

bob and i will dearly miss steve. and you, judy, can count on us as your friends forever and for whatever you need.
