Suzanne Bell Obituary

SUZANNE SHANAHAN BELL Age 76, died Tuesday, March 19, 2013, in Riverside, California. Death was due to complications of pneumonia. Due to additional medical complications, Mrs Bell had been confined to the hospital and skilled nursing facilities for the last 8 months. She was born in Rochester, New York, September 24, 1936, graduated from St. Agnes Academy and worked for Eastman Kodak. It was on a visit to New York City where she met her husband-to-be, William H. Bell (Colonel, USAF, Ret), then a Captain, during the taping of 'The Ed Sullivan Show' on Easter Sunday 1956. Married six months later in October 1956, Mrs Bell traveled with her husband to Germany, where he was assigned for duty, and where their three children were born. After Germany, the family lived in Niagara Falls, NY, Rochester, NY, Montgomery, AL (Maxwell AFB), traveled back to Wiesbaden, Germany, back to Montgomery, AL (Maxwell AFB), and finally settled in Riverside in 1975 when her husband retired from the Air Force. During the family's last tour of duty in Germany, Mrs Bell accompanied her husband throughout Europe while he coordinated with Intelligence personnel of various friendly countries. She served as a Goodwill Ambassador to the wives of foreign dignitaries, military counterparts, and other allied officers. Her skill, tact, and diplomacy as a hostess were unsurpassed and contributed greatly to the friendly cooperation between countries. For many years, in Riverside, Mrs Bell was an active and very involved volunteer for numerous charitable organizations and community groups. She was an industrious, self-motivated, and intelligent woman, who formed and was president of three companies: advertising, catering and business management services. When one mentions the name Suzanne Bell, music and singing come to mind. She loved to sing and shared her gift with everyone. As a young lady, she had her own music show on radio in Rochester. Many lives have been touched by this amazing lady and her lovely voice in and around Riverside. Surviving are her husband of 57 years, Colonel William H. Bell; her daughters, Suzanne Bell de Garcia of Long Beach CA and Kathleen Shanahan Bell-Conine of Zebulon NC; her grandson, Alexander Javier Garcia-Bell of Long Beach CA; and two brothers, Frank Shanahan of Fort Pearce FL and Daniel Shanahan of Carlsbad CA. She was predeceased by her parents, her sister, Gloria Lahon; her brother, Joseph Shanahan; and her son William M. S. Bell Funeral services will be held at the Home Cemetery, Tarkio, MO, in the near future. In lieu of flowers, remembrances can be made to the Disabled American Veterans (DAV), PO Box 14301, Cincinnati OH 45250-0301. Arrangements are entrusted to: Acheson & Graham Garden of Prayer Mortuary, (951) 688-1221. Please visit www.achesonandgraham.com to leave condolences.

Aunt Suzanne,
There are no words that adequately describe how much I love you and how much you truly have meant to me all these years. You have always treated me with an amazing respect and understood me in ways that not many people have. I am so sad to have to finish out my journey here on earth without your presence nearby in Riverside. Your laugh, your wit and your way of seeing things from a perspective that could always bring comfort will truly be missed; and of course your impeccable penmanship and lovely cards and notes that had a way of arriving at just the right moment. All of the things that you have shared with all of us about growing up, your family life back as a child and all the stories of Nana Jane and Bompa Joe have help me glean a bit more understanding of who I am and where I came from. There were so many questions and answers that we never got to, but we will when we meet again across the veil. Thank you for sharing your strong faith and your tremendous love and kindnesses. I know that you will be watching from above with Billy and sending just the right angel or St. to help me continue my journey. Until we meet again know that I will keep a candle burning for you and pray for Uncle Bill, Susie, Kathleen and their families as you would until the are brought home.
Love eternal,
I remain your devoted niece

I will miss you, Aunt Suzanne! You were always such a great historian for the Shanahan family. It was great hearing about the days in Rochester and all you kids growing up. I only wish we had lived closer to one another so that our visits were not so few and far between. You had such an easy laugh and a marvelous twinkle in your eye. Enjoy your reunion with Billy and we will all be together again one day forever in perfect peace and joy. With lasting love Kathy Jo.

Aunt Susie, I always loved seeing you and Uncle Bill and listening to your stories when we would get together. We had some great times and lots of laughs, I will miss that. You and Uncle Bill are a role model to me because you are always so sweet and kind to each other, I could see the love you have for each other and I thought, that's what I want. Thank you for all the great times, and showing me what a great relationship looks like. I love you very much.
