BERNARD COHEN Obituary

COHEN, BERNARD "BERNIE" 90 - of Brigantine peacefully passed away on September 4th at ARMC â€" Mainland Campus surrounded by his loved ones. He was predeceased by parents. Albert W. and Rose (nee: Brownstein) Cohen, brothers, Alec, Danny, and Frank Cohen, his first wife Vera B. (nee: Rappaport) Cohen, and the ultimate love of his life and wife of 48 years, Morray (nee: Booth) Cohen. Bernie was born and raised "downtown" in South Philadelphia. He proudly served his country in the Navy during World War II and was honorably discharged with the rank of Petty Officer. He returned to his Philadelphia home and shortly afterward moved to Atlantic City to operate a Boardwalk restaurant. Bernie lived in the shore area ever since moving to Brigantine in 1958. Always a hard worker, he sought success as a truck driver and a sales career in many different industries. Bernie went back into business operating the well-known, Roxy Corner on the Atlantic City Boardwalk. In 1969, he found a career and often said "he wished he would have started much early in his life;" he became a sales associate at Carrier Realty. He went on to become a broker in both insurance and real estate and was one of the most productive sales people in Brigantine, always furthering his education and mentoring new aspiring sales people with his experience. Bernie has the honor of being asked to join other real estate professionals on a trip to our nation's capital to lobby our lawmakers for real estate financing law changes that were desperately needed. He felt his greatest accomplishment was the role he played in the construction of Temple Beth Shalom's sanctuary. Over the years, he served as President, was instrumental in getting the congregation their first Rabbi, and always gave generously time and money to the Temple. He is survived by his son, Jerald H. and Sheila J. (nee: Weil) Cohen, grandson and granddaughter in law, Darryl S. Cohen and Cheryl Mallon, and sister in law, Martha Cohen. He leaves behind three special friends who helped him in countless ways the last few years; Arlene Erbacher, Sue Carrier, and Karen Sederholn and a legion of friends and people who came to him for help and were rarely turned away. Synagogue services will be held Monday 11:30am at Temple Beth Shalom, 4419 W. Brigantine Ave., Brigantine. Interment to follow at the Atlantic County Veterans Memorial Park, Estell Manor. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to Temple Beth Shalom or the Humane Society of Atlantic County, 1401 Absecon Blvd., Atlantic City.
