CHARLES HAURY Obituary

HAURY, CHARLES JOSEPH 86 - of Ocean City passed away on October 15, 2011 surrounded by his loving wife, Jeanne and daughter, Christine. Born on June 10, 1925 in Philadelphia, PA, Charlie was the son of the late Christian and Anna Haury. Service to his country being a central tenet of his life, Charlie entered the United States Navy upon graduating from Germantown High School. Charlie volunteered to serve in both World War II and the Korean War and was proud of his work as an Electrical Engineer on the USS Alabama in WWII. During the Korean War, he went to submarine school in New London, CT and graduated at the top of his class. Later while serving on Submarine USS Irex, Charlie was awarded the Meritorious Mast for his successful efforts to repair the ship's main drive motor at sea. During his 34 year tenure as a Field Manager at IBM, Charlie was responsible for serving the entire South Jersey region. His outgoing personality and determination served him well in achieving whatever goal he set for himself. Throughout his life, he was thoroughly devoted to his wife Jeanne and enjoyed their time together. Together, they took enormous pride in the accomplishments of their daughter Christine. Aviation played an integral role in Charlie's life. At the young age of 40, Charlie took up flying lessons and became a private pilot. Charlie looked forward to going to Oshkosh, WI to volunteer for flight crew safety. His Oshkosh friends missed him this year (his first absence in over 36 years) and made FOC (Friends of Charlie) shirts. He had a boyhood love of flying which he was able to realize later in life. One of his most proud accomplishments occurred in his late 70s. This personal feat was the building and completion of a Nieuport 11, WWI Bi-Plane. It is a single seat very light airplane that impresses all who see it. The enjoyment he had in flying his plane was only matched by the pleasure he took in building it. This was indeed a man of many interests and accomplishments. He was an active member of many organizations that allowed him to share his love and knowledge of aviation including; the Boy Scouts of America, Experimental Aircraft Association, American Legion, VFW: the Veterans of Foreign Wars, U.S. Submarine Veterans Inc., Lakehurst Historical Society, USS Alabama Crewmen's Association, Sport Aviation Association and United States Ultralight Association. Charlie was a member of EAA Chapter 287 and for many years, he gladly wrote the newsletters. He also was a member of the United States Submarine Veterans, EHT base. He enjoyed the camaraderie and kinship spirit of the submarine veterans. Charlie's courage and moral character will be forever cherished by wife of 58 years Jeanne; daughter, Christine; brother William along with many nieces and nephews. Also, a special thank you to Donna Storako and Suzanne Haury for all of their love and support. Jeanne always provided inspiration, humor, and strength to her husband. An inspiration to all who knew him, Charlie was truly a man who followed his convictions. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Young Eagles(Young Eagles, PO Box 3086, Oshkosh, WI/ http://www.givewingstoeaa.org/) or Patriots' Park (which contains the Armed Forces Monument dedicated to Atlantic County veterans, retirees, and active duty personnel killed or missing in action) (VFW Post #2189, 500 Bethel Road/PO Box 535, Somers Point, NJ 08244). A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, October 22, 2011 at 11am at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church (St. Damien Parish) at 40th Street and Central Avenue, Ocean City, NJ. Viewing from 9:45-10:45am. Burial will follow in Cape May County Veterans Cemetery, Cape May Court House, NJ. To email condolences, visit www.godfreyfuneralhome.com

I knew Mr. Haury through his daughter Chris. He was an accomplished man, but more importantly, he was an inspirational and loving father to his daughter, Chris. She often spoke of his character and his teachings. There should be more fathers like Charlie Haury in the world. He was a truly good man with a great sense of humor. Chris and Mrs. Haury, I am truly sorry for your loss.

We have missed Charlie for a long time, he was always at EAA chapter meeting at Woodbine. He always kept us on track. I spent many hours talking to Charlie while he was building the Neuport. He was a source of much knoweledge both about building airplanes but of life. He is missed.

Jeanne and Chris, my heart is broken at this terrible loss. Mr. Haury was such a brilliant yet humble man. I so remember him working on his plane in his backyard. How fantastic that he was able to not only complete the building --but fly and land HIS OWN plane. Yes -- a boyhood dream that came to life! So many fond memories --his smile and laughter -- so often due to Jeanne's many witty remarks -- and his constant pride and confidence in Chris. How he adored both of you! Our thoughts are with you. I worked with Charlie at SJG for years. If he was called in to help fix a problem, you knew you were in good hands.
I saw him a Sam's club a year or so ago, and he was as friendly as ever. I will miss him.
