Charles Winder Obituary

Charles Philip Winder

January 1, 1929 - November 22, 2024

Charles Philip Winder died in the early hours of Friday, November 22, 2024 at the Shore Medical Center in Somers Point, NJ. He had four children, Jim (Martha), Bob (Joan), Ross (Gwenda), and Nancy (Donald).Charlie also had five grandchildren, Elizabeth, Susanna, Abigail, Philip, and Charles. He had three great grandchildren, Charlotte, Fiona, and Murphy. He was 95 years old. Charlie had a wonderful life. He was married to Nancy Belle Parham for 63 years. Their loving, supportive, and enduring relationship provides a role model for all of us to admire and follow. They were the best parents anyone could hope for. Nancy Belle died in 2012 in their home of over 30 years in Northfield, NJ. A few years later Charlie met Sue Quinn, whose love and support enabled him to have additional active and rewarding years as they enjoyed antiquing across South Jersey and frequenting favorites restaurants. Our father was a Special Agent with the FBI for most of his adult life, retiring from the Bureau at age 50. He then began a second career as Assistant Director of Corporate Security at Caesar's Casino in Atlantic City. He retired from Caesar's at age 65. Charlie was a kind man to everyone he met. Rich, poor, young, or old, he was always kind. Charlie was born in Baltimore, MD on January 1, 1929. He was recognized as the first baby born in Baltimore that year. His parents were George Philip Winder and Barbara Elizabeth Winder (Wolf), both of Baltimore. He graduated from the Baltimore Polytechnic Institute, and then went on to undergraduate studies at Johns Hopkins University and the University of Baltimore. Subsequently, he received a law degree from the University of Baltimore Law School. After law school, he joined the FBI, which he always thought was "the best job in the world." Charlie enjoyed his many years as a Special Agent in New York City, and was affectionately known to all his friends as "Broadway Charlie." He loved football, wrestling, lacrosse, and golf. Charlie would come home early from work to watch his sons compete in wrestling and golf. He chauffeured Jim around New Jersey so he could play in golf tournaments, and he almost never missed a wrestling match when Bob and Ross were competing. After having three boys, Charlie and Nancy Belle were pleased to have their only daughter, Nancy, who brought great joy to their lives. Charlie was wonderful to his children and always encouraged us to be the best we could be. The entire family will remember the fun and memorable times we all had at the vacation homes on North Carolina's Outer Banks, first in Kill Devil Hills and then in Kitty Hawk. Charlie and Nancy Belle were active members of The Epiphany Lutheran Church (Pleasantville, NJ) for many years. His final illness began just a week before he died, from a collapse in the kitchen of his Northfield home. There was no long-term suffering, for which we are all grateful. Charlie was the best father, and we will miss him very much, especially in the weeks around Christmas and his birthday. His kindness and hard work are examples for us to live by. Charlie was buried on Saturday, December 7, 2024 in the Dulaney Valley Memorial Garden on East Padonia Road in Timonium, MD. We will celebrate his life on Saturday, January 4, 2025 reception from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and a service at 11:30 a.m. at the Adams-Perfect Funeral Home in Northfield, NJ. Instead of flowers, please make a donation to one of Charlie's favorite charities, The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.

Charlie was such a kind man and valued volunteer at Shore Medical Center. Nancy was also a sweet, kind and dedicated volunteer at Shore. Charlie and I would talk about sharing the same January 1st birthday. We also had many conversations about his career in the FBI, as my daughter at the time was considering that as her career path. Charlie was just so easy to talk with and I valued him as a volunteer and as a friend. His cheery, kind and gentle nature helped our patients, families and staff feel more at ease. We were doubly blessed to have both Charlie and Nancy as volunteers.
