DAVID DORF Obituary

DORF, DAVID CHARLES 78 - Born April 20, 1933 in New York City, NY, Dave passed away June 7, 2011 in Larnaca, Cyprus. He spent many years of his life in Margate, NJ. Dave was a graduate of the School of Hotel Administration at Cornell University, working his way through four years of college by cooking 40 hours a week. Later in life he received his Masters Degree from the Rochester Institute of Technology. Dave was a Certified Hospitality Marketing Executive (CHME) and served for 35 years as Director of Education and Training for the Hospitality Sales & Marketing Association International (HSMAI). He presented seminars and workshops for 20 years throughout North America and Europe. Besides writing numerous publications, Dave co-authored "Contemporary Hotel Sales," the first in a hospitality management series for Prentice Hall, Inc. He was also president of his own company, Dave Dorf Associates. Dave taught at the School of Hotel Administration at Cornell University and was a guest speaker at many colleges and universities on Hotel Sales Management/Marketing. He was a member of the Cornell Society of Hotelmen, Council of Hotel & Restaurant Trainers (CHART), the American Society for Training & Development (ASTD) and the Council on Hotel, Restaurant, and Institutional Education (CHRIE). Upon his retirement from HSMAI, Dave pursued a career as Professor of Hospitality Management at the International Institute of Tourism & Management (ITM) in Krems and Semmering, Austria. He also taught at ITM's branch campuses in Prague, Czech Republic and Bastad, Sweden. When he decided to fully retire, he chose the beautiful Mediterranean Island of Cyprus. Dave spent time in the Army, was a member of Toastmasters, enjoyed reading, listening to the oldies, country and classical music, watching professional wrestling, cooking, fishing and boating, and anything to do with the sun, sand and surf. He is survived by his daughter, Alexandra Charlton (Michael) and granddaughter, Madison, of Galloway, NJ; brother, Daniel Dorf (Evangelina) and niece, Katherine, of New York and Washington, DC; cousins, Victoria and Michele Dye, of Florida; Joan Zapata, of Texas (who was like a daughter to him); and Toni Marshall Dorf, of Atlantic City, NJ (who he always referred to as his favorite, and only, ex-wife). Dave was laid to rest on Wednesday, June 15, 2011, in Cyprus. All arrangements were handled by his good friend, Yiannis Maos. Donations in Dave's memory may be made to the American Diabetes Association, PO Box 11454, Alexandria, VA 22312.

Dave was by far my favorite next door neighbor. The memories of him walking outside with no shirt in the middle of the winter and his expert Tarzan calls will stick with me forever. He was a generous man. I'm sorry for your loss Ali.
