Doris Wilson Obituary

Doris Vivian Wilson

May 10, 1933 - January 7, 2025

Doris Vivian Wilson, 91, (Nee Wescoat) born and raised in Hammonton, passed away on January 7, 2025 at AtlantiCare Galloway of natural causes with her loving family by her side. She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph; parents, Doris and Gilpin Wescoat; brother, Donald Wescoat; and sons, Joseph and Steven. She is survived by her brother, Gilpin; and sisters, Norma Pinz and Bonnie Aungst. Doris is also survived by son, David; and daughters, Susan Williams (Norris), Brenda Falciani (Delfino), Rhonda Snyder (John) and Donna Brown (Albert); seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Doris graduated from Hammonton High School in 1951 as valedictorian and was very proud of winning the math award. After beginning a family, she continued her education by graduating from Atlantic Community College, and from Glassboro State College with a degree in Elementary Education. Over her lifetime, Doris had various jobs beginning as a soda jerk at the Sweet Shop during high school and later working the counter at Sears. She went on to work as a proofreader for the Hammonton News and Women's Wear Daily. She taught at the Atlantic City Hebrew Academy and tutored many children in math. Later she worked as an operator at Tropicana and Sheraton in Atlantic City. A lifelong member of the Hammonton Presbyterian Church, Doris taught Sunday school, led a group that crocheted prayer shawls, sang in the choir and played the bells. She is remembered fondly by many for her role at the church as a Cub Scout, Boy Scout, Brownie and Girl Scout leader. In her later years she found comfort in the daily reading of her Bible. An avid gardener, she loved spending time in the garden and canning the crops. Next to her chair was always her latest book and a sewing project. She knitted sweaters and toys, created Halloween costumes and decorated cakes with intricate designs. Over the years she used her knitting and crocheting talents to make hats for premature babies and slippers for hospital patients. Her compassion for the disadvantaged and her thirst for knowledge has been an inspiration for her children. They will always fondly remember her creativity, passion for learning and generous nature.

Family and friends are invited to attend her viewing Friday, January 17, 2025 at the Presbyterian Church of Hammonton 326 Bellevue Ave, Hammonton, NJ 08037 from 9:30 to 11 a.m., with funeral services to follow. Cremation will be held privately following the service.
