Jane Segal Obituary

Jane Dolores Segal

May 7, 1938 - January 12, 2025

Jane Dolores Segal, lovingly known by her nickname Mama Jane, was a kind and intelligent woman who touched the lives of everyone she encountered. Born on May 7, 1938, she was the only child of parents Lilian Esther Leek and Douglas Watfield, and stepfather, Watson Lewis.

Though she lost her parents at a young age, she admired and remembered them fondly throughout her life.

A graduate of Atlantic City High School and Glassboro College, where she studied education, Jane's passion for teaching was evident early on. She went on to become a beloved teacher in the Margate City School System and later served as the director of the ITA School in Ventnor. City.

Although she was named one of the "Nine Best-Dressed Women on the Boardwalk" on Easter in 1967, her true passion was always education, not fashion.

Jane devoted her life to teaching and caring for children. She was the proud mother of four, all of whom survive her: Douglas Segal, Kim Segal, Beth Segal and Bryan Sommers, Scott Segal and Andrea DelliSanti. She is also survived by four grandchildren: Tylar and Edward Sepulveda, Nicholas and Gabriella Gaitan, and three great-grandchildren: Olivia and Hanna Sepulveda, and Joslyn Gaitan.

A lover of music, Jane filled her home with the sounds of the piano and the laughter of children. Mama Jane's home was always a safe haven, not just for her own children, but for their friends as well, whom she cared for as if they were her own. As one of Mama Jane's "kids" shared, her candy dish was always full, and her door was always open; Especially on NFL Sunday's when her Rams were playing.

Jane spent her final Christmas creating lasting memories with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Though she has left a hole in many hearts, we take comfort knowing she is now at peace. Her legacy of love and joy lives on, and we know she will always be with us, encouraging us to keep singing and dancing through life. In lieu of flowers please make a donation in her name to a nonprofit of your choice.

Thank you, Mama Jane, for all the love you shared.

It's with sympathy that I read of Jane's passing. She was a dear first cousin that I remember fondly from singing Oh Holy Night at Christmas from the choir loft at the Ventnor Trinity Methodist Church to enjoying the Miss America Competition. A thank you to her family for their loving care. Rest in Peace Jane.
