John Collins Obituary

Collins, John, - 94, of Galloway, passed away peacefully at home on April 29th. John was most notably known as a man of Faith. He was the second child of John and Mary (Manning) Collins, born in Atlantic City, NJ. At 30 years old, John married his wife Marianna (Schryver) Woerner, a widow with seven children under the age of 10. Together they had three more children. No matter how tough the times might have been, John never stressed. John had faith and things always somehow got done. For most of his life, John raised his family in Ventnor, NJ. In 1997, Marianna and John downsized and moved to Galloway, NJ. Together they lived a full life, summering in NJ and snowbirding in Holiday, Florida. John continued this trend even after Marianna died in 2005. Besides being a great family man and man of faith, John also served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. Later he was employed by the FAA and retired as an Electronic Technician in 1990. He was very active as an Extraordinary Minister with both St Elizabeth Ann Seton Church in Absecon, NJ and St Vincent DePaul in Holiday FL. He also volunteered every week during the winter months at St Vincent de Paul's Food Pantry. John was preceded in death by his wife Marianna Collins; son Joseph Woerner; daughter Catherine Branca; granddaughter Francis Branca; and grandsons Christopher Gardener, David Woerner and Samuel Collins; his sister Helen Hughes; and brother Rev. William Collins. He is survived by his children Mary (Paul) Gardener, Walter (Marian) Woerner, Ruth Stitler, James (Pamela) Woerner, David (Debbie) Woerner, Therese (Bob) Senese, John (Susan) Collins, and Michael (Jane) Collins. He is also survived by 17 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, one great-great grandchild, a sister-in-law Marie Hughes and many nieces and nephews. John's happy-go-lucky attitude was infectious. As such, he also leaves behind many good friends including Lily, Charlie, Claudette, Bernie, and Elena. Visitation will be held Monday, May 6 from 10 to 11 a.m. at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church , 591 New Jersey Ave., Absecon, NJ 08201 followed by a Mass of Christian Burial. Entombment will follow at Atlantic County Veterans Cemetery in Estelle Manor, NJ. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to either St Elizabeth Ann Seton Church Social Action Committee, 591 New Jersey Ave., Absecon, NJ 08201, or Society of St Vincent de Paul, 4834 Mile Stretch Drive Holiday, FL 34690.
