The sad news of the passing of John Rigolizzo just reached me. I am saddened, but I take solace in the fact that his lagacy will live forever. John's leadership role in the agricultural community was colossal. His fingerprint is all over New Jersey Agriculture's future.

John was an innovator and smart entrepreneur in his own right, but he saw the need to advance the entire agricultural community instead of only promoting his own self interest. He went beyond that. He had a vision for the entire food value chain because he understood that farmers had to think beyond production, beyond the farm gate, and into the worlds of policy and markets. John also understood the role of science in agriculture and pushed those of us on the research side beyond the limits our imagination. He was not afraid to engage you if he thought that you needed to be set straight. I was a better man for listening to him.

Early in my tenure as Dean of Research at Cook College and the NJAES, John, Peter Furey and I met to discuss his ideas about our work. Both men were not afraid to give me a honest answer. Their statement to me transformed my thinking about my role. "Soji, there is a disconnect between the needs of we your clients and the work you and your people do at the college", they said. But John quickly added, "but I know you are the right man to fix it". Working with John and other leaders of the farm community, we explored new ways to do impactful work. A result was the millennium viability initiative. I also had the opportunity to work with John, Art Brown and many other thoughtful ag leaders on the farmland preservation, the right to farm, AERDI and other initiatives. New Jersey just lost a big one!

When Giants sleep, they sleep well. May John's soul rest in peace. My condolences and sympathy to the Rigolizzo family.

My deepest sympathy to you and your family. John was a highly respected person in the agricultural and horticultural industry. I had the pleasure of visiting him many times on his farm and at meetings like the New Jersey Peach Council which was probably the last time I saw him. He always displayed a optimistic attitude to us in agriculture. I will miss him.

John was for very long an icon of New Jersey's food system. He lived his life by simple but powerful ideals - service, commitment, dialog partnership and firmness. When the next historical account of New Jersey agriculture is written, John will prominently feature in it. Go well my friend and adviser. Rest in Peace. My condolences to Helen and the family. John was a great man.

My Uncle was very special. He was also my godfather, and I was very sad to hear this news. My parents knew that there could never be better godparents. He always had a nice smile for everyone, was happy to see you, and always said there's room for one more at their table. Our cousins and Aunt Helen were blessed to have him in their lives and I'm very sorry for their loss of him. There should be more people as genuinely good as he was. Rest in peace.
