Michael Callan Obituary

Callan, Michael "Mike", - 82, of Charlottesville, a devoted educator, loving father, cherished grandfather, and beloved brother and cousin, passed away peacefully on February 3rd, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of warmth, wisdom, and unwavering love.

Born in Atlantic City in 1941, Mike was a proud graduate of Atlantic City High School, class of 1959. He pursued his passion for literature at Glassboro State College, earning a BA in English in 1963. With a keen intellect and a compassionate heart, Mike dedicated himself to shaping young minds as an English teacher at Toms River High School South, where he inspired generations of students with his passion for language and literature.

Mike's greatest joy in life was his family. He is survived by his sons, Michael and Devon, his daughter-in-law, Debbie, and his soon-to-be daughter-in-law, Kristen. He also leaves behind his grandchildren Jessica, Michael, Cassidy, Julia, Emma, Matthew, Lydia, and Katherine, his sister Elizabeth, her husband Jim, his sister Carol, her husband Eric, his sister-in-law Maria, and numerous nieces and nephews. His grandchildren held a special place in his heart, and he cherished every moment spent with them, imparting wisdom and creating lasting memories.

Growing up in Atlantic City, Mike was surrounded by a large extended family. He had 13 cousins during his childhood; while time has passed, six remain, carrying on the memories and traditions of their shared upbringing.

Mike's commitment to family extended beyond the home; he also coached basketball and baseball, guiding not only his sons but also countless young athletes through the intricacies of basketball and baseball. Through the avenue of sports, Mike imparted invaluable life lessons, teaching the importance of teamwork, discipline, and perseverance.

A celebration of Mike's life will be announced later, providing an opportunity for family and friends to come together and honor his memory. In place of flowers or donations, Mike's family encourages all who wish to pay tribute to him to raise a glass of fine wine in his honor and make a toast to a life well-lived.

I graduated in 1965. I had Mr Callan his very first year at TRHS. My memories of him? A gentlemen and dedicated to his profession and students. Many years later my son attended TRHSS and I went to the open house.. My son was now in Mr Callan class. As I approached Mr Callan he laughed and said this is a moment I dreaded, "I have the student who is the son of a past student". We had a good laugh. Rest in Peace Mr Callan.

And prepared be to be the teacher I am today. Thank you. I will be sure to have a glass of wine in your name. Anne Gearing
