MICHAEL D'AMICO Obituary

D'AMICO, REV. FATHER MICHAEL - went home to his eternal reward with God on Saturday, June 12, 2010. He was born November 1, 1938 in Vineland to the late Viola and Michael D'Amico. Father Michael was raised in Wildwood. After graduating from Wildwood Catholic High School, he entered the seminary of St. Charles in 1953. Rev. Father D'Amico was ordained in 1964 at Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary Overbrook, Wynnewood, PA. He served five South Jersey Parishes: St. Augustine's, Ocean City 1964; Most Holy Redeemer, Westville Grove 1964-65; St. Michael's, Atlantic City 1965-75 and 1998-2005; St. Frances Cabrini, Ocean City 1975-1998, and St. Peter's, Pleasantville, 1996. Father D'Amico re-established the congregation at St. Michael's Atlantic City and was pivotal in the renovation of both the church in 1998 and the adjacent Dante Hall Theater of the Arts in 2003. He was also active in the renovation of Duck Town and in social programs that benefited Atlantic City. Father D'Amico served on the faculty at Holy Spirit High School from 1965-1996. As moderator, Father was instrumental in establishing the Boys' Crew at Holy Spirit High School with Coach Stan Bergman in the mid-1960's. By the early 1970's HSHS crew became a national powerhouse. During Father's tenure HSHS Crew won numerous National Championships and traveled to Henley Royal Regatta in England five times, winning The Princess Elizabeth Challenge Cup (recognized as the High School World Championship) three times. Everyone who rowed at HSHS during the 1960's, 70's and 80's will remember Father for his energy, discipline, boisterous laugh, and the statement "indeed" which was his response to a new piece of knowledge presented by an oarsman that impressed him. He will be missed by the rowing community worldwide. HSHS Crew was a passion for Father, but academics was his primary focus. He mentored many rowers and non-rowers at HSHS, and helped countless number of students to achieve admission into the top universities in the county. Father D'Amico was a gourmet chef hosting many spaghetti dinners. He also was a patron of the arts, and his love of the arts was evident in his decorations throughout the many churches he served. Father was an avid reader and particularly enjoyed world history. Throughout his lifetime, Father D'Amico worked endlessly to assist and enrich the lives of all those he encountered. He would always help anyone in need and was a true friend to the end. Surviving are his brother, John (wife Janice), sister-in-law Patricia, two nieces, Mary and Theresa (husband Ed Grant), three nephews, John, Mark (wife Lisa) and Christopher. Two step-nieces, Donna Torroni (husband Steve) and Beth Poole (husband Nicholas). He is also survived by several great nieces and nephews. Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, June 17th at 12 noon, at Our Lady Star of the Sea Church, Atlantic and California Aves., Atlantic City, NJ. Friends and relatives will be received on Thursday morning from 8 AM at the Church. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Holy Spirit Boys Crew, 121 N. Oxford Ave., Ventnor City, NJ 08406. Arrangements by Ingersoll-Greenwood Funeral Home of North Wildwood, NJ.

Fr D'Amico was one of my best friends. Like so many others mentioned his guidance, discipline and generosity were incredible. A tremendous positive influence. Family friend, mentor, teacher ... with a surprisingly hard punch to my shoulder when I stepped out of line. I miss him.

In 1988, Fr. D'Amico welcomed me to Holy Spirit High School for my Senior Year of high school. It was my third high school.... I think he was a great man and I loved him as a mentor and a priest. One of the happiest memories I had that year was surviving about 10 seconds of his "Spock grip" on my shoulder after mis-behaving during a Football practice. I deserved it....but coming from him, it made me feel welcome, part of the team, and accepted. He knew I came form a family in "distress", and his kindness to me made a huge impact. Before I knew it I was working for him after school. He mentored me, taught me, and got me into an "ALANON" program at the school...... I changed my life. I moved away from NJ 17 years ago but I used to try to find him before I had children of my own. Now I know why I could not. I would loved to visit his cemetery and pray for him. If you agree to it, I can be messaged at [email protected]. Thank you. James Bickel, Class of 1989

My family and I will always remember Father D'Amico as ... "the Body of Christ" ... those words echoed throughout St Frances Cabrini when he gave out communion ... Father D'Amico was a Christ like man, loved by many and a true gentle man ..
May God Hold You in the Palm of His Hand.

God Bless you Father D'Amico...Thanks for all you did for me back in HSHS...your legacy lives on.

June 18, 2010

I met Fr D'Amico when I first came to St Francis Parish. I was questioning my faith at the time, but it only took a few minutes with Father Mike to straighten me out. I enjoyed alot of fun times with Father as well. I helped him out in the kitchen for many childrens parties, adult dinners, even family bbq's outside in the parking lot. He was a great chef. I have never met a priest that I was as comfortable with. Thank you to the D'Amico family for sharing Fr Mike with us and thank you Fr Mike for teaching me alot of lessons. You will be greatly missed, but always remembered.

Father guided me through high school, college and law school. He supported me through Spirit and Temple crew. He burried both my parents. He guided my siblings through school. He married Barb and me at St Mikes. He raised Money for me to take Spirit to Henley in 2003. He was the reason to go to St. Mikes for mass every week. We didn't just lose a teacher, moderator, priest or friend we all lost our Patriarch. If every priest was like Father D'amico, the church would be blessed. The Stefanski family will never forget him.

I knew Father D'Amico from attending Mass at St. Francis Cabrini.
I often went to him for Confession. He was a truly outstanding
man, and one of the holiest, most orthadox priests I met in my 21
years of Catholic education. He very unjustly suffered much toward
the end of his life. I have tears in my eyes reading all of these
wonderful memories being shared by so many in this Guest Book.
All that truly knew Fr. D'Amico feel a very great loss and much sadness
at his passing. God Bless you, Father. Thank you, Father. May you forever rest in peace in God's Presence.

Father D'Amico showed so many the right way to live; I was fortunate to be under his wing and know that I would not be where I am without his love and support. God's blessing to Father D'Amico and his family.

I extend heartfelt sympathy to the D'Amico family.
I have experienced Fr. D'Amico as a teacher at Holy Spirit High School and as a Parish Priest at St. Frances Cabrini Parish in Ocean City, NJ.
While he was stationed at St. Frances Cabrini Parish, Fr. D'Amico went through a metamorphosis whereby he became selfless...it was not about "he" anymore but about "we."
His talented hands transformed HSHS utilizing his artistry with wood.
There was no house keeper at the rectory and Father was then administering drops in Msgr. Conlon's eyes, preparing lunch for Fr. Spaith as well as all other visiting priests, visiting all ages of people in the hospitals, executing heartfelt emotional homilies while comforting the bereaved...the list goes on and on...
On a personal note, Father comforted my children when my own father passed away.
Fr. D'Amico was born on
All Saints Day...he evolved into a living saint. We all have flaws. Let us remember all of the good that this man as Priest has done in God's name.
May God hold you in the palm of His hand. AMEN.

Fr D'Amico was a huge part of my 4 years at HSHS. Although I never did , I remember him badgering me to sign up for crew but more importantly making sure I was doing well.

I forever became the "Doctor" when one day after practice he and I were walking in the hallway and his forehead clipped a metal gate hanging low fromt he ceiling. With a major gash just above his eye, blood everywhere, he and I broke into the nursing office to clean him up and put some butterfly wound closures to seal the wound.

He was an institution and will be missed dearly.

Father Mike was the most wonderful character I have ever met in the church, he was like St. Peter, full of bluster, yet kind and so talented. Had he not dedicated his life to the church he could have been anything in world. Our blessing was that he choose to serve our Lord, and we were blessed to have him as our Priest. God Bless you Father Mike.

.Father D'Amico was one of the finest men that I met in my 77 years. I helped Father and Stan Bergman for years with the boy crew. I spent many days on the road with Father and Stan Bergman and trips to Henley, England. He was a hard worker and made many fine men from the boys in his crews. He will remain in my heart and prayers until the day I die.May he rest in peace.

God bless Fr. D'Amico. He was a wonderful part of St. Michael's. I knew few priests who were as attentive to their flocks as he was. As an Altar Boy, I spent much time with him...he was like a counselor in many ways, but above all, he was the embodiment of what a truly great priest should be. My family and I will miss him very much. God Bless this truly great man.

My thoughts and prayers are with the D'Amico family. Father D'Amico’s selfless dedication helped make the rowing team a success not just in terms of wins. More importantly, his leadership helped make it successful through the lessons and values that shaped, and continue to provide guidance. Without his mentoring, it would have been more difficult to realize the opportunities that I've been fortunate enough to experience.

His dedication to the students of Holy Spirit was extraordinary as he selflessly served our interests during and in the years following high school. I gratefully remember his celebration of my and Lisa's wedding mass less than a day after breaking his ribs in a car accident. His friendship and commitment that day, as in numerous days past, was only one example of his loyalty and perseverance. He will be missed.
