George Newman Obituary
February 26, 1937 - September 19, 2025
George Allan Newman of Haymarket, VA died September 19, 2025, and is survived by his wife of 62 years, Sue Miller Newman. Al was born in Charlottesville, Virginia on February 26, 1937, to George and Annie Newman. He was one of four children who included Alice White and Samuel Newman who are deceased, and Waller Norford who resides in Charlottesville, VA. Al has two children: Michael and his friend Mark Hare and Beth and her husband Mark Dethlefsen and two grandchildren, Becca and Sophie. He graduated from Lane High School in Charlottesville and after four years in the USAF, he attended the University of Virginia. Upon graduation, he went to work for the Lehigh Portland Cement Company and worked for them for 38 years, retiring in 2003.
Al played all sports – softball, basketball, football, and golf. He finished his golfing days at the Evergreen Country Club; he claimed it is the nicest golf course in Northern Virginia. Allan was interested in music, playing trumpet in a variety of bands over the years. He played with the Capital City Big Band for many years and was in the back up band for Frank Sinatra at the Cap Center and played with Mel Torme and a variety of other jazz musicians over the years.
Al enjoyed life and life as it presented itself. He loved to walk (alone) and that was his endeavor for the past ten years. He taught Sunday School for several years at Grace United Methodist Church in Manassas, which was a real joy to him. He felt, "Love is not love / Which alters when it alteration finds." That quote from Wm. Shakespeare kind of guided his life.
Thank you to the staff of hospice Vitas of Fairfax for being there when Al and his family needed their support.
The family will receive friends at the Grace United Methodist Church, 9750 Wellington Rd, Manassas, VA 20110 on Friday, October 3rd. Visitation will be from 11am to Noon, service at Noon. AL will be interred at the columbarium on the grounds of the church.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Grace United Methodist Church (https://umcgrace.org/) or to a charity of your choice.
