ALGERNON COOPER Obituary

Mr. Algernon Cooper, Sr., 57, departed this life Friday, March 24, 2017, at Retreat Doctors' Hospital following a long-term illness. He was born on December 26, 1959, to Rudolph F. Cooper, Sr. and Annie Reese Cooper in Manhattan, NY. As a young child, the family moved to Petersburg, Va., where Algernon grew up attending First Baptist Church.

Algernon, affectionately called "Al," was a 1978 graduate of Petersburg High School where he excelled in his studies. He also attended Virginia State College (University) and served his country Honorably in the Army Reserves. He did not shy away from hard work and was blessed with many jobs, trades, and talents. Al was very artistic and was gifted in drawing. The "Grill Master" also loved to barbecue and loved the Washington Redskins. He had a flair for fashion and reveled in cracking jokes. Al enjoyed gospel and "old school" music.

Above all things, Algernon loved the Lord with all of his heart and used his time serving others. He always gave the best advice and was helpful and encouraging. Al was known to "check in" on the elderly, sick, and shut-in. He also volunteered in the political arena by registering citizens to vote.

Algernon was predeceased by his wife, Mary "Connie" Louise Cooper; father, Rudolph Cooper Sr.; dad, Willie L. West, Jr.; mother, Annie R. West; maternal and paternal grandparents; brother, Glenn R. Cooper Sr.; brother-in-law, Louis M. Stewart; and a host of uncles, aunts, cousins, and friends.

Algernon leaves behind his children, Alana C. Smith (Daniel), Algernon Cooper, Jr., and Logan Cooper; grandchildren, Isaiah D. Smith and Levi D. Smith; siblings, Marjorie A. Peterson (William), Linda A. Stewart, Rudolph F. Cooper, Sr. (Marion), Debra D. Bilal (Dawud), Dwayne Cooper, Renee L. Wimberley, and Beonca L. Taylor (Anthony); and a host of uncles, aunts, nephews, nieces, and friends, including one devoted fianceé, Frances Baugh.

The family would like to thank the staff of Retreat Doctors' Hospital and VCU Medical Center for their loving care of Algernon during his illness.

Services for Mr. Algernon Cooper, Sr. will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 1, 2017, at the Chapel of J.M. Wilkerson Funeral Establishment, Inc., 102 South Avenue, Petersburg, Va. Interment to follow at Dinwiddie Memorial Park.

Crossing the Bar

Sunset and evening star,
And one clear call for me!
And may there be no moaning of the bar,
When I put out to sea,

But such a tide as moving seems asleep,
Too full for sound and foam,
When that which drew from out the boundless deep
Turns again home.

Twilight and evening bell,
And after that the dark!
And may there be no sadness of farewell,
When I embark;

For tho' from out our bourne of Time and Place
The flood may bear me far,
I hope to see my Pilot face to face
When I have cross the bar.

Sending our deepest sympathy and condolences to Linda Stewart and family during this difficult time for the passing of your beloved brother Algernon. Keeping the family in prayer asking God to continue providing the strength needed during this difficult time. Remember God makes no mistakes even when we don't understand why things have to happen beyond our understanding. Another guardian angel to watch over the family. We are just a phone call away!
