CHARLES SCOTT Obituary

Charles Franklin Scott Jr., 85, of Petersburg, Va., died peacefully in his home on May 7, 2012, lovingly surrounded by family.

He joined the Navy in 1945 as part of the Air Cadet program and was engaged in Naval flight school training at Memphis Naval Air Station when the war ended. After the service, he graduated from the College of William & Mary in 1948. A lifelong fan of William & Mary, Mr. Scott was a member of the Olde Guard and the Chieftain's Club. He was a loyal supporter of W&M football, and he enjoyed tailgate picnics and sharing his 50-yard-line seats with friends and family. He was a lifetime member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Petersburg, Va. Over the years, he served in many capacities, including the Board of Trustees and the chairman of the Board of Stewards. Mr. Scott became president of C.F. Scott Inc., a real estate and insurance agency, when his father retired in 1957. Under his direction, the firm experienced tremendous growth in the real estate sales and property management divisions as well as the insurance division. Mr. Scott served as president of Southside Virginia Association of Realtors in 1955. He retired from the real estate business in 1975. Scott served as president, CEO, and chairman of the Board of Virginia Commonwealth Bank (formerly First Federal Savings & Loan Association, formed in 1936). Under Mr. Scott's leadership, from 1970 through August 2011, the bank grew to nine branches located in the Tri-Cities, Chesterfield, Richmond and Suffolk areas. Mr. Scott was an active member of the Petersburg Lions Club, having served as president in 1965. He also served as president of the Southside Virginia Fair Board in 1961, a major fundraising activity of the Lions Club. During his life, he enjoyed weekly duplicate bridge, earning the bridge Life Master rank. He shared his love of the water with his family — boating on the James River and enjoying Virginia Beach. Competitive in all things, he enjoyed golf, tennis, and a good game of chess. Mr. Scott was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Franklin Scott Sr. and Hellen Muse Scott, and his brother, Lt. j.g. William Chadwick Scott, USN, all of Petersburg.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Jane Eanes Scott; their four children, C. Frank Scott III and his wife, Lori, Chad Scott Nystrom, Allison Scott Williams and her husband, Mike, and Susan Scott Permoda; five grandchildren: Sara and Holt Williams, Scott T. Nystrom, C. Frank Scott IV, Joanne Scott Inman and her husband, Ryan, and the first great-grandchild, Carter Marie Inman. He is also survived by his brother, Dr. Robert B. Scott and his wife, Harriet, of Richmond, Va., and sister-in-law, Judy Eanes (wife of the late Nelson Eanes) of Birmingham, Ala.; numerous nieces and nephews in Virginia and Alabama. The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to Pam Reaves, Melody Bradley and Melvin Short, the very special staff at Superior Care whose ongoing devotion allowed him to be well-cared for at home over the last year.

A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, May 11, at the Petersburg Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home & Cremation Service with the Rev. Dr. Gerald Miller officiating. Interment will follow at Blandford Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations to your favorite charity, or to The Richard Bland College Foundation, 11301 Johnson Road, Petersburg, VA 23805, or to Crater Community Hospice, 3916 S. Crater Road, Petersburg, VA 23805. Condolences may be registered at www.jtmorriss.com.
