Eleanor Fields Obituary

Mrs. Eleanor Rebecca Fields, also known as "Doll Baby", 71, of 21108 Warren Ave., Matoaca, entered eternal rest on Thursday, May 27, 2010. She was a native of Chesapeake, Va., and was the daughter of the late Joseph and Mary Alice Davis (Hill).

She received her education at Carver High School, in Chesapeake. Eleanor believed that education led to great success. After raising her two daughters, she went back to college to earn a Bachelor of Individualized Studies from Virginia State University in 1989. Mrs. Fields retired from the Petersburg public school system where she devoted her life to teaching children.

Eleanor received Jesus Christ and was baptized early in life. She joined First Baptist Church, Harrison Street Petersburg and served faithfully until her death.

She was the loving and devoted wife of Melvin Ralph Fields for 42 years and from that union was born two daughters.

Eleanor was devoted to public service. She was a committed member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated. Mrs. Fields was a great community leader, always caring for others. Doll Baby was a great cook and when you heard about soul food, you knew they were talking about her.

She has touched the lives of so many people that are too numerous to name and will truly be missed, but never forgotten. Eleanor had six siblings who preceded her in death, Carolyn, Melvin, Willie, Carrie, Bernice and Anna Mae (Margie) and one grandson, Brian E. Curtis II.

Eleanor leaves to cherish her memories: her two daughters, Gwendolyn C. Proctor (Joseph) of Clinton, Md., and Angela R. Curtis (Brian) of Midlothian; one granddaughter, Niya R. Proctor of Clinton Md.; one sister and three brothers, Shirley Jefferson (Edward) of Chesapeake, Joseph Hill of Chesapeake, David Hill of Norfolk, and Eugene W. Hill (Deborah) of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; a special aunt, Ada Mae Davis; three sisters-in-law, Rosalyn Wilkins of Portsmouth, Elaine Harris (William) of Hampton and Deloris Fields of New Bern, N.C.; one brother-in-law, Alvah Fields (Sasithorn) of Saudi Arabia; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and devoted friends.

A funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Monday, June 7, 2010, at First Baptist Church, Harrison Street, Petersburg with the Rev. Dr. Jeremiah Tillman, pastor, officiating. The interment will be in Virginia Veteran Cemetery at Amelia.

All are invited to attend the Omega Omega ceremony performed by Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated at 4 p.m. Sunday at the chapel of William N. Bland and Son Funeral Home. The immediate family will assemble 9 a.m. at the residence on the day of service.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the staff of William N. Bland and Son Funeral Home, Petersburg.

It will be the little things that you will remember: the quiet moments, the smiles, and the laughter. And although it may seem hard right now, it will be the memories of these little things that help to push away the pain and bring the smiles back again.

With heartfelt sympathy for one who lovingly touched so many,
