HELEN MASON Obituary

On Wednesday evening at approximately 4:10 p.m., our beloved, mother, sister and grandmother, Mrs. Helen Elizabeth Mason, 85 years young, departed and entered into her final rest and reward on Feb. 6, 2013. She resided at 2900 Homestead Drive, Petersburg, Va., for over 29 years. Born on Oct. 10, 1927, she was one of 14 children to the late George and Mattie Chambliss Mayes. Helen received her formal education in the public school system of Prince George County, Va. At a young age, she married Walter Lawrence Saunders (deceased) and remarried again to Mr. Gene Mason (deceased).

For over 20 years she worked as a dietician at Guardian Care Nursing Home in Petersburg Va., and Titmus Optical for over 10 years. Helen loved the Lord with all her heart. She was a praying woman, who would rise early at 4 a.m. every morning interceding on the behalf of others with her prayer partner. She became a member of Mount Olivet Baptist Church, Petersburg Va., where she was a devoted member for over 34 years.

Helen was a wonderful friend, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, godmother and friend to all that she met. She never said a harsh word to anyone who she came in contact with but possessed a quiet, strong and firm demeanor. Helen had a quiet, loving and peaceful disposition and served as a backbone for her loving family. "Momma Mason," as she was affectionately called by those who loved her, will be greatly missed.

She was preceded in death by her loving son, Lawrence Alexander Saunders (Jennifer); brothers, Alexander, Roosevelt (Katie Mayes), James (Edith Mayes), Bryant (Inez Mayes), Charles (Jean Mayes) and Ray Mayes; two loving sisters, Ruby Calhoun and Earlene (Charles Spencer).

Left to cherish her memory are: four loving children, Barbara Dianne (Claude Thomas Dean), Carol Renay Jones, Gary Lee Saunders and Patsy Laverne (Hubert Lee Simmons); 14 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren;loving sisters, Annie Mayes, Marian Mayes, Mattie (McKinley Hinton) and Shirley Mayes; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of friends, along with one great-goddaughter, MaKenzie Penny.

A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2013, at Mt. Olivet Baptist Church, 800 Augusta Ave., Petersburg, Va., the Rev. Dr. Wesley K. McLaughlin, pastor, eulogist. Interment to follow at Wilkerson Memorial Cemetery.
