Midlothian - Mr. Herb Baugh was born James Herbert Baugh in Brooklyn, NY, on January 26, 1932 to Carrie Rawlings Baugh and William Harrison Baugh, Sr. Herb was the youngest of their five children. In 1937, the family moved back to its former home in Petersburg, VA. Herb attended public schools but then boarded at St. Emma Catholic Military Academy in Powhatan, VA. After graduation, he attended Virginia State College then transferred to Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, PA, where he studied to be a priest. But his life took a different path as he enlisted in the Air Force in 1956. He graduated from Basic Flight Training at Bainbridge Air Base in Georgia and served as a pilot until leaving the Air Force in 1960. Herb worked as a Letter Carrier for the U. S. Postal Service in Jamaica, NY, and taught at the Amityville Flying School on Long Island. He became a full-time Charter Pilot to business people and celebrities logging 5,000 hours of flight time in 28 different types of aircraft. Herb then worked as a manager for a printing company and then for the Internal Revenue Service until his retirement in 1997. It was during this period that he also raised champion Akita dogs for show and sale for about 8 years. In 1998, he moved with his sister, Olivette, to Midlothian, VA, where he dabbled as a photographer, head cashier at Walgreens, and volunteered his services to the Catholic Church. Herb, 89, passed peacefully at home on Sunday, August 8, 2021. The last of his generation, he was preceded in death by his two sisters, Carolyn Baugh Dorsey and Olivette Baugh Robinson; and two brothers, William H. Baugh, Jr., and Howard L. Baugh. He is survived by two nieces, six nephews, and many great nieces, nephews and cousins. Services will be held 12:00 P.M., Monday, August 16, 2021 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 151 W.
