JAMES MERCER Obituary

Mr. James Lee Mercer, 56, known as "Jamie," departed this life Sunday, December 3, 2017, at his residence. He was born September 21, 1961, to the late George Mercer, Sr. and Nellie Barrett Mercer in Pitt County, NC.

He was a graduate of Farmville Central High School, Class of 1980. Thereafter he served four years and ten months in the United States National Guard and Army. James was awarded the Army Service Ribbon, Army Achievement Medal, the Army Commendation Medal and Overseas Service Ribbon. He was employed at Virginia Concrete for several years upon moving to South Hill.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Earl, John-Walter and William and one sister, Lou.

James leaves to cherish his memory: one daughter, Jamisha Lecole "MiMi" Mercer of Petersburg; mother of his daughter, Michelle Mercer-Brent of Petersburg; two stepsons, Dameon "Peanut" Williams and Dejuan Williams, both of Petersburg; step-daughter, Lisa Williams of Petersburg; step-mother, Sallie Mercer of North Carolina; brothers, Willie Mercer of New Haven, CT, Bud Mercer (Liz) of Farmville, NC, Harold Mercer (Patricia) of Charlotte, NC, George Mercer, Sr. and Clarence Mercer (Mattie) both of Greensville, NC, and Charles Barrett (Christine) of Columbus, GA; sisters, Joyce Ann Graham, Blondie Simms, Patricia Mercer and Linda Mercer all of Farmville, NC; two brothers-in-law, Benjamin Williams, Jr. (Donna) of Richmond, and Darryl Williams (Nikeisha) of Glen Burnie, MD; a mother-in-law, Sandra Williams of Petersburg; father-in-law, Benjamin Williams, Sr. (Dottie) of Petersburg; a devoted friend, Irma Barkley; a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Service for Mr. James Lee Mercer will be held at 12 noon, Monday, December 11, 2017, at the Chapel of J.M. Wilkerson Funeral Establishment, Inc., 102 South Avenue, Petersburg, Va.

The family will assemble at 11 a.m. the day of the service, 301 N. Dunlop Street, Petersburg, Va., and may be contacted by calling (804) 479-2538.

In lieu of floral arrangements, the family request plants and dish gardens.

My uncle Jamie, wow you left us unexpectedly and to soon. But God only takes the best and makes no mistakes. Everytime the phone rings I'm hoping it's you on the other end saying your doing your monthly checkin like you always do but it's not. I was looking forward to seeing you again soon to laugh and cut up like we always did. But I have memories to go by when I think of you.
