Julia F. Robinson

Miss Julia Frances Robinson, 94, of Richmond, Va., passed away on Sunday, Oct. 18, 2009.

A native of Beverlyville, Northumberland County, Va., she was the daughter of the late Beverly and Maud Crowder Robinson. She was predeceased by her brother, Beverly C. Robinson.

She was a graduate of Reedville High School and received her B.S. degree from Fredericksburg State Teachers (now Mary Washington) College. Her graduate studies in the fields of library science and educational media were completed at the College of William and Mary and at Virginia State University. She began her career as teacher and librarian in public schools in Kilmarnock and Callao before becoming librarian of Petersburg High School in 1942. In 1943 she was appointed Petersburg City School library supervisor, a position she held until her retirement in 1979.

Miss Robinson held memberships in professional organizations on local, state and national levels, holding offices in both education and library associations. She received two awards: The Virginia Educational Media Association's Media Educator of the Year and The Virginia Educational Vendors' Achievement Award. She was also active in the work of the United Methodist Church, serving in various areas of local, district and conference programs. She was an active member of Washington Street United Methodist Church in Petersburg for 47 years.

Miss Robinson is survived by her cousins, Alice and Tommy Bartley, Christy and Steve Perkins, Deborah Smith, Hannah Smith; and devoted companion, Victoria L. Kennedy.

A graveside service will be held at Roseland Cemetery, Reedville, Va., at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 22, 2009. A memorial service will be held at a later date at the Hermitage in Richmond.

Faulkner Family Funeral Home & Crematory, Burgess, Va., will be handling the arrangements.
