PHILLIP MCCLURE Obituary

Phillip Hutson McClure, 78, beloved husband of Maureen Fitzpatrick McClure, died peacefully in his home, surrounded by family, Saturday, February 18, 2017. He was born March 30, 1938, in Chickasha, Okla., a son of the late Dr. Harold M. McClure and Mildred Hutson McClure.

He attended Amherst College in Massachusetts, where he was a member of Delta Upsilon fraternity, from 1956 to 1960. Dr. McClure received his medical degree from Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, Ga., in 1964. His internship and residency in Radiology was done at Hartford Hospital in Hartford, Conn., 1964-1965. He served in the U.S. Army Reserve from 1965-1973 as a Captain in the 407th Army Field Hospital.

Dr. McClure practiced as a radiologist for 45 years – 35 with Tri-City Radiology in Petersburg. He served as chairman of the Radiology Department at Southside Regional Medical Center from 1990-2001. Dr. McClure felt very fortunate to have been an integral part of expanding modalities of radiographic imagery in this area. He belonged to the American College of Radiology, the North American Radiologic Society, the American Medical Association and the Medical Society of Virginia.

As a devoted parishioner of Christ and Grace Episcopal Church, he participated in mission trips, Passport Camp for teens and the Usher Program and frequently contributed his time and talents to the church.

He served on the board of the Southside Virginia Emergency Crew and the United Way. In addition, he gave many volunteer hours to Rebuilding Petersburg, Habitat for Humanity and Meals on Wheels. The Petersburg Rotary Luncheon Club was dear to his heart, and he cherished the bonds forged as they "stirred the stew" together. He received the club's Lifetime Achievement Award in 2014. As a Paul Harris Fellow, he supported all the initiatives of the Rotary Foundation.

In addition to Maureen, his wife of 41 years, he is survived by his children, Phillip H. McClure, Jr. (Karen), Bradford A. McClure (Kris), Catherine C. Lyle, Anne Maureen McClure and Michael F. McClure (Kelly); grandchildren, Kellie, Lauren, Allan, Jake, Fitz, Morgan and Sophie; brothers, Donald H. McClure (Kay) and Rick H. McClure (Nancy); brother-in-law, Neal E. Fitzpatrick, Jr. (Sandie); sister-in-law, Lorraine F. Christiansen (James) as well as many beloved nieces and nephews.

Dr. McClure was a man of many interests and accomplishments. He was a private pilot, an avid sailor and skier, a Master Gardener, photographer and woodworker, building furniture and dollhouses for his family. He will be missed greatly by his many friends and his family.

A memorial service will be held at Christ and Grace Episcopal Church, 1545 South Sycamore St., in Petersburg, Va., on Saturday, February 25, 2017, at 11 a.m. with reception following in Lackey Hall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Christ and Grace Episcopal Church Memorial Fund, 1545 S. Sycamore St., Petersburg, VA 23805 or the Southside Virginia Emergency Crew, P.O. I am fortunate to have known and worked with Dr. McClure in my years as an RT at Southside Regional. He was an ardent supporter of the students and technologists, bringing doughnuts to the workers on many a weekend shift and attending graduations and luncheons on their behalf. He was a compassionate doctor with his patients and a kind, friendly person to all who knew him. Dr. McClure will be missed by many. My prayers are with his family.
