TONY GREENE Obituary
Tony was born to Irene Johnson and the late William H. Greene, Sr. on June 9, 1972, in Franklin, Va. Tony accepted Christ at an early age and began his walk to serve the Lord. God gave Tony the gift of music and he was blessed to use this gift for over forty years. At the age of nine, he became a musician at New Branch Baptist Church in Ivor, Va. He continued to grow in music and became the musician for Ebenezer Baptist Church also in Ivor and the Shiloh Baptist Church in Windsor, Va. Because of Tony's great talent at the age of fifteen, Mrs. Grace Dennis introduced him to the Bethany Association where he worked and learned under the leadership of Mr. Buckner Gamby.
Tony was later approached by Dr. Rosa Wynn to become the Minister of Music for Bethany Missionary Baptist Church in Petersburg, Va. He accepted the position and moved to the Petersburg Tri-Cities Area. Bethany was blessed with Tony for over thirteen years. Tony continued to grow under the spirit of God with a choir that lifted the name of Jesus each Sunday. Under Dr. Wynn, Tony was able to complete two live recordings with Reverend Luther Barnes and also attend the fall gospel classic at the Red Budd Holy Church, Rocky Mount, NC. He was also blessed to do a live recording with Providence Baptist Church in Petersburg, Va., with the Brenda Bonner Memorial Choir.
During his time in Petersburg, Tony became very close with Ms. Reese and Mrs. Mable Blackman and they took him under their wings. In 1992, he met Ms. Margaret Jackson and worked with her for three years and became her son. They had a great bond that only God could break.
Tony continued to play for various churches in the area to include: New Life Ministries, Cornerstone Ministries, Little Bethel Baptist Church, and the Tabernacle Baptist Church. Tony was a member of the Combined Voices of Zion, the Flower Singers and The Petersburg & Vicinity Chapter of the Gospel Music Workshop of America. Tony also played for J.M. Wilkerson Funeral Establishment, Inc., Johnson's Funeral Services, Bland and Tucker Funeral Home, J.T. Morris & Son Funeral Home, J.L. Dodson and Sons to name a few, bringing comfort to many bereaved families in the Tri-Cities Area. He was the accompanist for many psalmist to include Sis. Charlotte King Reaves.
Tony leaves to cherish his memories: his mother, Irene Johnson; siblings, Lisa Hawkins (Emery), William H. Greene, Jr. (Sherlene) and Carlton Greene; a nephew, Jeffrey Hawkins; nieces, Alicia Kendred, Adrian Wooten (Howard), and Shannon Hawkins; godmother and caregiver, Margaret Jackson. Tony is also survived by a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, other family and friends.
A Celebration of Music Memorial Service will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, December 29, 2017, at Tabernacle Baptist Church, 418 Halifax Street, Petersburg, Va. A celebration of life will be held at 12 noon, Saturday, December 30, 2017, at Shiloh Baptist Church, 9000 Firetower Road, Windsor, Va. Interment to follow at Ebenezer Baptist Church, Ivor, Va.

So sorry to hear about the passing of Mr. Tony Green. He was a very nice person that had compassion for others. When I lost my best friend, Mr. Tony was playing for Wilkerson Funeral Home. I didn't know it, but GOD had a plan for me to sing my best friend favorite song. Mr. Tony step in and put the music to it. I will never forget it. Thank you.

I have known Tony since he was 6yrs old ,I can still see that Lil boy with that bright smile,we we're from the same neighborhood, Central Hill...I last saw him at my church in Virginia Beach,New Beginning church of Christ,I loved his playing on them keys n singing with his anointing voice.. My heart is so full right now; there's no way you could know Tony and not love him!! He lead the Men's Chorus at Tabernacle Baptist Church. I don't care when or where I saw him He always spoke and had a smile on his face!! He was a very humble man!!

This is so surreal. Tony was my musician for many years at Bethany Missionary Baptist Church. Even after her left anytime we called him he was there. My prayers are with the families at such a difficult time.
