Early Wednesday morning, March 7, 2019, Mr. William D. "Bill" Smith, transitioned from the Colonial Heights Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center in Colonial Heights, VA, to his heavenly home. He was born to the late William and Myrtle Gannaway Smith on February 24, 1948, a birthday he shares with his wife, Mary.

Bill attended school in Chesterfield County, VA. He was a former security guard, detective, truck driver and musician. He was also employed at Brown and Williamson. He loved telling jokes and making people laugh. Bill also liked helping people.

Bill is survived by his wife of forty-nine years, Mary Hearn Smith; sons, Kevin Smith (Helaina Scott) and Keith Smith; daughter, Karen Smith; granddaughter, Jayda Smith all of Petersburg, VA; sisters, Lavern Smith of Petersburg, VA, and Monica Smith of Ettrick, VA; brother Jerry Smith of New York; nephew, Travanti Smith of Ettrick, VA; and niece, Sha-mecca Smith of New Jersey. He is also survived by numerous cousins and extended family to include: the Evans, Sharpe, Fields, Thompson, Lofton-Kelley, Johnson, Hill, Butler, Leach-Gilliam, Morris and Tucker families; Ernestine Myrick and the Washington Columns family and Antionette Godette.

The family would like to acknowledge and thanks the staff of Colonial Heights Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center and everyone for their various acts of kindness it is greatly appreciated.

Service will be held 1:00 P.M., Wednesday, March 13, 2019 at the Chapel of J. M. Wilkerson Funeral Establishment, Inc., 102 South Avenue, Petersburg, VA, the Rev. Leroy A. Cherry, Pastor of Third Baptist Church, Petersburg, VA, eulogist. The interment to follow at Virginia Veterans Cemetery.

The family will assemble 12:00 Noon the day of the service and will receive friends at 633 W. Washington Street, Apt.105, Petersburg, VA.

We always enjoyed being with the family and Bill when you came to Gloucester County. He loved music and ofcourse Bill would play songs for us at my house and we would laugh at his jokes. I would like to say that when my mom Virginia Moore told me that my friend Mr. Smith had passed, my heart sadden instantly. Mr. Smith was a special person who loved to joke each and every time I saw him. We would talk about the animals and joke that squirrels needed to put some shoes on their feet. I will truly miss him from opening the door when I visited my mother. I pray that he is resting in the arms of our savior and surrounded by those squirrels, and other animals with their winter gear on!! REST IN PEACE
