My heart broke this morning when I saw this obituary.. I loved seeing Daniel at his appointments and having our weekly discussions. No matter what, he was always smiling, even when you knew he wasn't feeling his best. My heart goes out to his partner and family. He truly was an amazing human being.

I was so saddened to learn of Daniel's sudden passing. I was still getting to know him as a fellow Chair and I was already impressed by the warmth of his welcoming personality. I send my condolences to his many loved ones.

Daniel was so kind and loving to my wife and I and our daughter, Pippa, close friends of James' children. We will treasure a card he sent us with a drawing of a picketing person with a sign that read Pippa for President! He believed in making the world a better place and we will always remember him.

As an English major at RIC, I had the great opportunity to be mentored by Dr. Scott. When I switched from my psych major to one in English, not only did he outline the process for me--he, the English Department Chair--took me on as his advisee. I also took his Reading Globally course, and throughout that semester he helped me grow as a writer through his gentle yet sharp criticism and caring personality.

Not only will I miss him as a role model, the entire RIC community and countless others will be effected by his untimely passing; for a man as kind, caring, intelligent and wise as Daniel Scott is a very rare one.
