Edgar Lownes Obituary

LOWNES, EDGAR JOHN III 88 of Fort Myers, FL passed away on January 11, 2016. Ed was born on April 18, 1927 in Providence, RI to the late Edgar John Jr. and Sybil Hyde Lownes. Ed graduated from Moses Brown School in 1945 and from Brown University in 1950 receiving a BA in Economics. He is a member of the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity. He was in the Navy 1945 and 1946 and trained as an electronic technician. After graduation he joined his father's (and grandfather Edgar John Lownes) business, American Silk Spinning Company. His career in the textile industry also included sales work with Astro Dyeworks and Tillinghast Stiles. He retired in the early 70's to New Hampshire where he was a selectman for the town of Lyme, NH and served as a member of the NH House of Representatives. He later moved to Dalton, NH and married Juanita (Penny Pendris) Price in 1999. The couple moved to Gulf Harbour Golf and Country Club in Ft. Myers in 2000. Over the years Ed enjoyed outdoor activities, gardening, cooking and music. Ed is survived by has wife Penny and his brother David A. Lownes (Westwood, MA). He will also be missed by nieces Grace Lownes-Lincoln (East Walpole, MA), Suzanne Lownes (Overland Park KS) and Gretchen Stark Schmidt (Mission Viejo, CA) as well as his nephews Robert Lownes Jr. (Boerne, Texas) and Charles Lownes (Shaker Heights, OH). Ed is predeceased by his parents and brothers Robert Lownes and Walter Lownes. A private service will be held in Fort Myers, Florida and a memorial service will be held at Swan Point Cemetery in Providence, RI in the summer. To honor Ed's memory, donations would be welcome to the Hope Hospice of Fort Myers. The family would like to express their deepest appreciation to Hope Hospice for their extraordinary and loving care.
