Memories of Dad
Our Dad was a very thoughtful person. I think there was not a single issue, event, or topic that he would not enjoy talking about. I always got such pleasure listening to his views on any subject at all. I feel that he really did know so much about so many things. He was interested in everything and read a wide variety of books. He liked novels, history, and books about philosophy and travel. He often wrote mini-reviews in his books. I opened a favorite book of his this week, and saw his handwriting—“Re-read in 2011, as good as ever.” Another book is inscribed “so-so.”

Some people often pass along their ideas without considering the other side of the coin. Dad would study both sides, accept an objection, and go on with his point. He was a formidable debating opponent, but was open to different ideas. The classic book about Catholic spirituality, The Seven Storey Mountain, stands on his bookshelf beside A Treasury of World Religions.

Dad was a great salesperson. He worked in several sales capacities throughout his career and was successful. Naturally congenial, he advised me during one rebellious period in high school to get along with my teachers and bosses, to ease my own way in the world. He was the world's best dressed Dad, had an easy smile, and Mom says he never took a bad picture.

Our Dad modeled time well-spent. He got great enjoyment from gardening, music, painting, sculpture, and woodworking. His sculpture of his own father is a true likeness of the man. We have all been the recipients of wooden objects that he built and plant seedlings that he nurtured. While he did employ a professional builder to raise the frame and outside walls of his house, Dad built the inside walls and did all of the finish work himself, with our dear Mom as his assistant. Recently, he amazed us with his ability to perform minor body work on his car. He never let any problem get the best of him, and solved problems in his own self-taught way. He was very proud of all his accomplishments.

Throughout the years, Mom and Dad hosted many happy gatherings—Christmas Eve, birthdays, weddings, graduations, and cookouts on the deck. This is how he brought, and kept the family together. He loved his grandchildren and enjoyed hearing about their lives, and meeting their friends. He was looking forward to visiting one granddaughter's new house. His love for his wife and family was as true as it could be, and his long and happy marriage continues to be a model for us. I know he is looking down on us and smiling. We love you, Dad.
