POITRAS, Henry J. "Chief"
87, of Warwick, passed away peacefully Sunday, February 7, 2021. He was the beloved husband for 66 years of the late Florence E. Poitras and son of the late Henry and Loretta Poitras. Chief Poitras was employed by the RI Air National Guard for 37 years, serving 27 years as chief of the fire department where he retired in 1993 as Chief Master Sergeant. He served as President of the RI Fire Chiefs Assoc. as well as President of the RI Fire Instruction Assoc. He also served as Executive Vice President of the Air National Guard Fire Chiefs Assoc. which represented National Guard Fire Chiefs nationwide, and was a member of the Executive board of the RI National Guard Retires Assoc. Henry is survived by his three children, David Poitras of Charleston, SC, Denise Grandchamp of Warwick, RI and Stephen Poitras and his wife Debra of Narragansett, RI. Henry was the loving grandfather of Raymond Grandchamp, III and his wife Laurie and Michael Grandchamp and his wife Jill, as well as six great grandchildren, Althea, Catalina, Broden, Dylan, Cameron and Morgan. He is also survived by his brother Robert Poitras and his wife Johanna of Cranston.
His funeral will be private with military honors in the RI Veterans Cemetery, Exeter. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to the Rhode Island National Guard Retirees Association Emergency Support Fund, C/O 645 New London Avenue, Cranston, RI 02920, will be appreciated.
