Hope Gale Obituary

GALE, HOPE (HEDBERG), 99, of Newell Drive died December 28th at St. Antoine Residence, North Smithfield. She was the wife of the late Frank H. Gale. Born on April 6, 1911 in Woon- socket, the first child of the late Lars Walfrid and Caroline Elizabeth (Johnson) Hedberg, she had been a resident of Cumberland for many years. She was a graduate of Pawtucket High School, 1930, and of Bryant-Stratton Business School, and then worked for several years for Brown Lyle & Marshall in Providence prior to her marriage. However, her true love was music and she was an accomplished musician. She was a professional organist and Choir Director at the Four Corners Community Chapel in Cumberland. She was also a piano teacher to many children and adults. She met her beloved husband, Frank, while she held a similar position at the Universalist Church in Pawtucket. She was a member of the American Guild of Organists. She had four brothers, Carl, Earl and Roy, all who predeceased her, and Ralph Hedberg of South Kingstown. All of her brothers were talented musicians and her brother Earl was a member of the Boston Symphony. In addition, she leaves numerous nieces and nephews and a stepson, Richard D. Gale of New Durham, New Hampshire. She was known to hike mountains (to a certain level) with her beloved Frank and she had great interest in traveling, summering at her home in Touisset Point and the joyful gatherings with family. She was a lifelong member of St. Matthew Trinity Lutheran Church, Pawtucket and she was active in the Lutheran Club Women's Group and also served as Church Treasurer. The funeral service will be held WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 5 at 11 A.M. at St. Matthew Trinity Lutheran Church, 690 Newport Avenue, Pawtucket. After the Church service and the collation at the Church, burial will take place at Bellevue Cemetery in Harvard, Massachusetts. Relatives and friends are invited. Gifts may be given in Hope's memory to St. Matthew Trinity Lutheran Church for the Music Educational Fund or the American Guild of Organists, 475 Riverside Drive, Suite 1260, New York, NY 10115. For years Hope and I were next door neighbors on Newell Drive. I really enjoyed her company, and often took my mother-in-law to visit her. They were a good pair, as both focused on the positive. Dave and I extend our condolences to the family, and our thanks to God for creating such a sweet lady.
