Joseph Marzilli Obituary
Born in Providence, a son of the late Salvatore and Maria (Corrente) Marzilli, he had been a resident of Warwick for 60 years. Mr. Marzilli acquired the Old Canteen in 1956 and for over 50 years operated the family run Federal Hill landmark. Over his career, he received many proclamations and awards including 'Best Of' from Rhode Island Monthly. He was inducted into the Johnson and Wales Hall of Fame and was recognized in 2002 at a Culinary Legends Award dinner for his contributions to the restaurant business. He was a communicant of Sts. Rose and Clement Parish, Warwick.
He leaves 2 daughters, Jean Marzilli and Emma D'Antuono and her husband, Donald; 2 sons, Salvatore Marzilli and his wife, Carol; Joseph Marzilli and his wife, Gail. He was father of the late Marie Carde and her late husband, Nic, Brother of the late Albert Marzilli and the brother in law of Annette Marzilli. Also survived by his beloved 10 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.
Mr. Marzilli's funeral will be held Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. from the Thomas & Walter Quinn Funeral Home, 2435 Warwick Ave., Warwick with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 am in St. Clement Church, Long Street, Warwick. Burial in St. Ann Cemetery, Cranston. Visiting hours Monday 4-8 p.m. Flowers or memorial contributions to the Joseph Marzilli Scholarship Fund, Johnson & Wales University, Providence Advancement Office, 8 Abbott Park Place, Providence, RI 02903 will be appreciated. He always made us feel like valued customers, and we were often flattered when we brought guests there, and we were treated like family. What a rich legacy Joe leaves. Dear Mrs. Marzilli & Family:
Almost 40 years ago, when I first came to practice Law in Rhode Island, I was introduced to Joe and his fine restaurant. Although I was "wet behind the ears" Joe was kind, courteous, respectful and instructive. I learned from Joe and was proud to introduce him to my sons and daughter as a friend as well as an extraordinary restauranteur. When I last saw him at the dinner for the Providence Opera Company, it was as if the years had not passed - the twinkle in his eye, his graciousness, his gentlmanly demeanor, had not changed nor been dulled by the passage of time. I am sorry that I will not be able to introduce my new grandson to Joe, but I shall be proud to take him to "Joe Marzilli's Old Canteen" and tell him of the great man behind the name.

To The Marzilli Family: We came to know you all because of the Old Canteen. We came to know your husband and father as the faithful gate keep, always ready with the question, "DO YOU HAVE A RESERVATION?" The Old Canteen was not just another Italian Restaurant, it was "Joe Marzilli's" Old Canteen, as the sign over the Atwells Avenue entrance proclaims for all to see. Mr. Marzilli was the epitome of what a restauranteur should be. Proud of his restaurant, selective of his help, completely involved in day-to-day operations, all to insure the highest standards for his patrons. His visit to each table, extending a warm and earnest greeting was a tradition in which the first time visitor and the long-time regular sincerely appreciated. We will miss him, but we will never forget that gracious man with the deep voice. May he rest in peace.

PLEASE ACCEPT OUR DEEPEST SYMPATHY. MY FAMILY HAD THE PLEASURE OF KNOWING JOE FOR OVER 60 YEARS. HE DELIVERED MILK AND CREAM TO MY GRANDPARENT'S BAKERY BEFORE HE EVEN STARTED THE OLD CANTEEN. IT WAS ALWAYS A GREAT TREAT FOR ME TO SEE JOE BECAUSE HE ALWAYS HAD SOME FATHERLY ADVICE FOR ME AFTER MY FATHER WAS KILLED AND ALWAYS A FUNNY STORY TO BUILD UP THE SPIRITS. JOE WAS VERY REGIMENTED IN HIS WAYS THAT LED TO A PREDICTABLE CONSISTENCY AT THE OLD CANTEEN. MANY RESTAURANTS HAVE COME AND GONE WITH ALL THE FADS BUT JOE STILL MARCHED ON WITH HIS MENU. THIS IS A GOOD TIME FOR SAL TO BE HIS OWN MAN AND TRY SOME IF ANYTHING DIFFERENT NEED BE ADRESSED. JOE WAS HIS OWN MAN AND I WILL NEVER FORGET THE "PRICELESS MOMENTS" I HAD AT THE OLD CANTEEN.
