Joseph Mattia Obituary

MATTIA, JOSEPH 'PAPA JOE', 88, of Cranston, formerly of Providence, died Monday August 28, 2006 at the Veterans Administration Medical Center, Providence. He was the husband of the late Rita (Caraccia) Mattia.

Born in Providence, he was the son of the late Emilio and Nancy (Vecchione) Mattia.

He was a WW II Army Veteran. Mr. Mattia worked for the U.S. Postal Service as a letter carrier for 18 years until his retirement. He was a member of the National Association of Letter Carriers.

He is survived by his children Sandra Pitassi of Cranston, Joseph Mattia ,Jr. of Sunbury, Ohio, Edward D. Mattia of Wyoming and the late Emilio A. Mattia, a brother Edward Mattia of Johnston. He was the grandfather of Angelo A. Pitassi, II, Charles J. Mattia, Thomas E. Mattia, David Coonts, Virginia Doty and the late Alycia Pitassi-Tigges and four great-grandchildren. He was the brother of the late Hugo and Mario Mattia.

His funeral will be held on Friday at 9 a.m. from the NARDOLILLO FUNERAL HOME, 1278 Park Ave., Cranston followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in the Immaculate Conception Church, Oaklawn Ave. Cranston at 10 a.m. Burial, with military honors will be in St. Ann Cemetery, Cranston. VISITING HOURS Thursday 4-8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Juvenile Diabetes Reserch Foundation, 2374 Post Rd., Suite 203, Warwick, R.I. 02886.
